My wife and I like Chipotle so when I was told this place was "like Chipotle but better" I was eager to try it out, unfortunately I was pretty disappointed.
The mariachi music was turned up to 11, it was physically painful to stand under the speaker just inside the doorway.
I ordered a burrito with pork, the woman scooped a small amount of pork and put it on the grill to warm it. I thought that was pretty great until she then took about half of it and put it on my burrito. I had to ask for extra meat just to get a normal amount, I went with beef, then added med salsa, cheese, guacamole and lettuce. The rice was cold and hard, the pork extra fatty, the beef a bit dry, and the salsa had no heat at all. No salt or spice on anything so it was all pretty bland. I also got chips and guacamole, the chips were super over cooked and unsalted so they were totally bland and nearly too crunchy to eat, the guacamole wasn't bad though.
Two of the women I spoke to didn't speak English particularly well and didn't understand much better. My wife has a gluten allergy so she asked if the corn taco shells we're cooked separate from the flour stuff, the woman at the counter was very confused and could not answer. She went with a bowl.
Overall I was pretty disappointed with the whole experience. I normally would give them a second try but, even though my wife didn't order anything that should have contained gluten her lunch still set off her allergy completely ruining the rest of her day. Cross-contamination is obviously a problem.
As a comparison to a typical Chipotle, the options are fewer, the quality is much lower and the prices are no better. I probably should have gone...
Read moreMy gifriend and I have been regulars to California Burrito for years now. The Amherst Street location, Nashua, and now this location in Hudson. Unfortunately, over time the quality of this location has gone downhill and after tonight I've reached my final straw. To preface this, the quality of food is not the issue and never has been. The food is always excellent here, especially the steak. This location suffers from other issues that make it so we won't be coming back here again for a while. The line is almost always to the door and it isn't just at dinner or lunch time. I understand the restaurant gets a lot of online orders but the priority in which customers are taken care of just doesn't make sense and most of the time you'll be waiting 30+ minutes in line to get served. In addition to that, depending on who is working the consistency in which you get served is different. The portions are quite different and sometimes lesser depending on who is there. In addition, if they are low on something they will just recommend you choose something else or give you a very small amount scraping the bottom instead of giving you a proper amount. Tonight they gave my girlfriend an ingredient she didn't ask for and then gave attitude to her after the fact and didn't want to make the order right and start over. In the end, we did get a replacement bowl but it just didn't sit right when we are regulars here 1 time a week for the past few years. Until they get the customer service, portions, and wait times under control we won't be coming back here and will migrate to a...
Read moreEdit: About 9-10 months after my initial review. Still nothing bad to say about the place, at least from my experience. The service is always prompt, the food doesn't appear to have been sitting all day (I've tried to catch them at random times with my burrito cravings), staff is still super friendly and courteous and even taught me a couple of spanish words for the food I order... probably since I get the same thing most of the time. I have tried their carne asada fries... boss. Also their dos equis fish tacos, spicy (for me anyway), again... boss. I do wish they would throw in more quac, but from a cost/benifit point of view, in New England those things ain't cheap. Overall, good burritos, good environment, great people. Can't beat it, especially given the consistency, which I hope continues into the future.
Saw the place open recently and decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed, the burrito was excellent, all of the ingredients seemed fresh, they even cut the chicken for my burrito while I watched. Their guac was pretty good though, there was an upcharge for it. The staff was very friendly and attentive, and appeared to have a vested interest in ensuring my experience was pleasurable. The interior is pretty interesting, there's, what appears to be, a hand painted mural on the wall of Californian scene scapes, the tables are plentiful and there isn't a cramped feeling while you're eating. Overall, I'd say it's a pretty good place, and for a burrito and a drink I paid about $12, so...
