It's beautiful inside and it has a very pleasant, comfortable feel to it; Very retro. Sadly, it failed in every other regard.
The menu has very little to offer, is unlike most menus (even McDonald's offers a meat product with their 'breakfast special' but meat has to be added for an additional $3.50), and is far too expensive considering bang for buck.
I'm very easy to please when it comes to breakfast. 2 eggs over easy, a couple strips of bacon, buttered toast, and a bonus for hash browns. This is like 6 bucks at Richards restaurant but just under $15 here (and Richards comes with coffee, here it's an additional $1.99)
Worst of all was the food itself. The toast was just bread that was allowed a few seconds per side on a griddle. Very soft and mushy. One egg yoke was already broken and drying to the plate when I got it, and the "cheesy hash brown" was more like a lot of cheese and a little mashed potatoes. I wanted to eat it, considering the price but a few bits was all I could tolerate.
I'm going to wrap this up... Service? No refills offered until we were finished eating. I'm a small business owner and I wanted to do some paperwork while there and the waitress said, "Y'all done or do you need some more time?"... We could not have been there 10 min after our food arrived and most of the...
Read moreNick's Kitchen is known for its breaded pork tenderloin sandwich. It is an historic, small town, Cafe style restaurant. I consider myself a bit of a breaded pork tenderloin aficionado. I always try the breaded pork tenderloin sandwich if it is on the menu at a restaurant that I am newly visiting. Today, hubs and I decided to take the trek to Huntington, IN for the famous Nick's Kitchen pork tenderloin sandwich. My first pleasant surprise was that they not only had the traditional HUGE pork tenderloin sandwich (BPT), but they also offered a "mini' version. (I only eat about 1/3 of a usual, large BPT sandwich.) It was nice to have a smaller option. OMG. This was the BEST BPT ever! A lovely cornmeal crust, on a thin slice of truly pork tenderloin (not pork loin), and not overcooked. (i.e. not chewy: just tender.) Their hand-cut fries were perfection, and hubs loved their macaroni salad. Service was exceptional, and we loved the cozy, small town feel of the restaurant. Then, there were the homemade pies; I think there were 16 choices. Hubs ordered the Dutch apple pie and agreed with the server's suggestion that he have it warmed up and to add ice cream. As we were driving home, hubs said that was the best apple pie he ever had. ...
Read moreWe stopped here on a roadtrip, because of its reputation for the pork tenderloin sandwich, which was only one of our selections. We found it to be good, crispy and juicy. I did not think it was the best I had ever eaten. The breaded mushrooms were also tasty, crispy and not greasy. I ordered the special, chicken and noodles with mashed potatoes, but was pretty disappointed. It was not at all what I expected. I found very little chicken, and the broth was watery, and did not have much flavor. To me, it did not taste homemade. The mashed potatoes were very bland, and truthfully, I could not tell if they were scratch or instant. The service was lacking, because there was only 1 waitress for the entire place. To her credit, she kindly waived the cost on our milkshakes because they took the entire meal before we received them. The bathroom was very dirty, smelled bad and had wet floors, and the basket was overflowing. I did like the diner ambiance,, as a whole, and it was a comfortable restaurant. I realize some of the issues were because of the times we live in, with workers being difficult to find. But because of my experience as a whole, I can't give a rating higher...
