I got there before 11a on a Sunday and was told they're no longer serving breakfast. The whole reason I went was for their advertised breakfast, but I decided to give their lunch a try anyway. It didn't take long to get seated. Be warned it is noisy, if you have anyone in your party who is sound-sensitive. It has a concrete floor, they play Americana 50s-ish music, and it's a casual environment where everyone speaks loud enough to be heard at their table over the music and room noise.
Every single staff member was respectful and courteous. It took inexplicably long for my meat & 3 to be served, though. When the meal was served, my meatloaf was cool throughout and my veggies were almost too hot to eat. The meatloaf serving was small, in proportion to the plate and large veggie servings. The red sauce on the meatloaf was a runny tomato sauce style instead of a paste-thickness. At least it was easy to scrape the sauce off the meatloaf.
In terms of flavor, the black-eyed peas and green beans were perfectly seasoned in southern comfort food style. The green beans are not vegetarian-friendly, if that matters to you, as they're seasoned and served with chunks of ham or bacon (so very tasty!). The cornbread tastes like Jiffy mix cornbread (a little on the sweet side and a little dry) and there's a tray of jellies on the table, if you like that on your cornbread. The fried okra tasted like baked okra - this is not a complaint - it was slightly crispy, hot throughout, and not greasy at all. The flavor of the okra was basic (think Cracker Barrel fried okra).
The sweet tea did not disappoint (sweet, but not syrupy and not bitter).
The peach cobbler, on the other hand, did disappoint. The cobbler was not served a la mode (i.e. there wasn't a vanilla ice cream scoop). Ok, not a big deal, just a difference in menu/plating than most Southern food places. The disappointment was that it had only a couple peach slices and had barely any syrup/juice. It seemed more like a peach crumble than peach cobbler, but maybe I just ended up with the last scoop and all that was left was mostly a mix of dry and mushy bread (yep, a single dish can both be dry and mushy).
I did ask about the catfish - it's boneless, if that's more your thing. If I go back, I'll be sticking with a veggie plate and I'll probably try a biscuit instead of the cornbread again.
In terms of price, it was higher than I expected for the types of food and serving sizes. My total was just under $20 (including tax) for a sweet tea, meat & 3, and small side of...
Read moreReally more like a 3.5 because I don't have any huge complaints, but I also probably wouldn't go out of my way to return here and so that makes it more comfortably in the realm of a 3 than a 4 for me.
Came here after a doctor's appointment at around 11 on a Monday. There's not a ton of parking and the location is a little nondescript. I walked into a dimly lit but spacious setup. It's a little shopworn inside but seems clean enough. I was instructed to seat myself where I liked. The restaurant wasn't super crowded but the acoustics are such that sound carries and it was a little loud.
I took a booth that wound up having a very uncomfy cushion, but I didn't want to confuse the staff by moving so I dealt with it. A waiter came by soon to drop off a menu. They serve breakfast all day and have some plate lunches. A lot of reviewers complained about the lunch options seeming canned or just not as fresh, so I decided I'd do a late breakfast/breakfast for lunch to ensure I got fresh food.
They do a cake and eggs special that comes with scrambled eggs and pancakes. I got that with hash browns and bacon and a sweet tea to drink. The prices are reasonable here. My food came out to me quickly but not so quickly it didn't seem fresh.
Overall, it was decent! My sweet tea wasn't super flavorful but it was thirst quenching. I think the best things were probably the pancakes; they weren't standout but just simple cakes cooked well and served hot. The scrambled eggs were fine too, though I wished for a little salsa or hot sauce to put on them. Hash browns were standard; a little under-crispy for me beneath the very crispy top, but I like them practically crunchy.
One thing that was VERY crunchy was the bacon. I like my bacon cooked pretty well, but this was beyond that; I don't think I even finished it because it was just so crispy and hard. That was the low point.
Again, nothing was really bad but simultaneously nothing really stood out, and given how far away from me this restaurant is I doubt I'll make a special trip. One thing that did stand out to me was a few dishes like chilaquiles and burritos on the menu. I noticed the wait staff were all speaking to each other in Spanish. I wonder if I missed out on the good stuff? Might be worth a try.
If you're in the area, this'll do for a fast and adequately prepared...
Read moreI wish I would have heeded everyone's warning about how not good the food was from here. I recently had surgery and really wanted some southern food but blue plate is too far from where I live so my husband picked up food from here. The chicken and stuffing tasted nasty. The gravy on top tasted like it was poured straight from a can. The Mac and cheese tasted like someone's unseasoned side dish at a potluck. The hasbrown casserole I have had worse, however the biggest disappointment and what I waited for all week was the cobbler. I was like why the heck does this taste off. I had my husband try it he said it tasted undercooked you can taste the actual flour in it. That is just unacceptable. My husband said his reuban wasn't very good either. He did say his fries were good.
**wanted to add to owners response since I can not directly respond to them. I said I recently had surgery never said I had surgery today. I had surgery a week ago so I could not go in today due to still recovering. I would have stated today so nice try with trying to blame it on anesthesia. I actually went to blue plate on the day of my surgery and had no problems with taste. I actually gave blue plate a 5 star rating because how amazing their food tasted. Also my first sentence was how I wish I listened to friends and family when they said yalls food tasted awful. On top of that what is your excuse for my husband not liking his reuban and let me tell you my husband love his reubans. The only thing he liked was your fries and me I liked your roll which is not very impressive....so no I don't think I will assault my tastebuds again with yalls food. One thing about giving services like food is consistency is really important and if you can't roll out good quality the first time then customers shouldn't have to keep wasting their money on your product for the hope it...
