Came by for lunch / breakfast for lunch with my mom this week for our weekly outing together. This small local spot is near the old Grissom High School / new south Huntsville library. Parking is ample, although super-close parking is a little bit harder to come by. Seating is very limited and it would probably be very hard to sit together if you came in a group larger than 4. None of that was a problem for us, though! We were comfy in our booth. Business was moderate at about 11:30 on a Friday.
They have pretty much every American breakfast item you could ever want: BYO omelet or burrito, pancakes, French toast, all manner of eggs, biscuits and toast, grits, multiple potato options. Also some standard lunch options (hamburgers, club sandwiches) and meat+3 plate lunches to include catfish and other southern classics. On the day we visited, they had pork tamales and huevos rancheros on special. Yum! Breakfast and lunch only here, fyi.
The place was clean and had a very high health department rating. I don't know that I'd say the service was effusively friendly, but they were certainly polite and running a very tight and efficient ship. Our food came out quickly, correctly, and piping hot. I thought the price was reasonable at ~$30 for two large entrees and two drinks.
My mom had two eggs over easy with a biscuit, hash browns, and bacon. The bacon amount was generous and she said her eggs were cooked perfectly. The biscuit was a little dry - presumably leftover from the breakfast rush - but plenty good with some butter.
We both enjoyed sweet tea to drink.
I ordered the "sweet beginnings:" two eggs (I asked for scrambled), French toast (added bananas), and hash browns. It was all yummy! The French toast was a little thinner cut than I expected but it was cooked just right and the bananas were a wise addition for a small extra cost. I typically prefer my scrambled eggs cooked a little runnier than the ones I got but I certainly understand why they cook them very thoroughly and I probably could have asked for them runnier. Mom and I both loved our hash browns. So often places get the top crispy but the bottom undercooked, but these were perfect. Crunchy on top and soft and fluffy beneath!
Overall, complaints are very minor and we had an enjoyable time together. We will certainly be back in the future for more French toast and...
Read moreThis is hands down my new favorite breakfast all day place and definitely on the top of my list of favorite restaurants in Huntsville overall! They have a lunch food option, but I've only gotten so far as the breakfast in several visits thus far. Everything seems to be prepared from scratch, like a home cooked meal from mom growing up. Nothing seems like it came out of freezer or low quality. They do the basics EXTREMELY WELL. I usually have the 2 eggs breakfast meal, and I ALWAYS finish the plate clean, eating every morsel. My best friend who usually goes with me has the Tomale breakfast or the chorizo breakfast, and he says it's the best in Huntsville! I have zero complaints about the restaurant except maybe the size. The secret is out about this hidden gem, and it gets busy, especially on the weekend. That said, the longest I've waited is 20 minutes. The service is very personal and competent, so they keep it moving in a good, efficient way that doesn't make you seem rushed! I could go into explicit details about every item I've written, but I'll just say it's all seriously the best of that item I've eaten in a breakfast place in huntsville, easily! It's owned by a small Hispanic family. The two brothers run it with their sister (I think). As I understand it, one of the owners' wives does the pre prep on anything that requires that, such as the tamales and the seasoning of the meats. Even the grits are great here, and I usually skip that. They simply do everything on the small but ample restaurant really, really well! I can not recommend them enough! They are closed on Mondays, but other than that, they are open till 8 pm every other day. As I said, be ready for a little wait on weekends as the size of the space isn't huge. Whatever the wait, I promise you...
Read moreSouthern Egg Cafe is unpretentious. It is easy to miss it from the road; it sits back in a corner at the edge of a small strip mall on Bailey Cover Road. It is small, relatively new, but it has gathered a faithful clientele and business appears to have picked up considerably since it opened and people learn about it..
We tried it recently, without any expectations for the quality of the food. It was very good. We ate there twice before leaving town for several weeks. We returned again a few weeks later when we were back to Huntsville.
The pancakes have always been cooked perfectly. They were a golden brown and not burned. The bananas added to the top made for an excellent breakfast. Other toppings are also available.
On another trip I ordered fried eggs with hash browns and an English muffin. The muffin was very fresh, served warm and also not burned. The eggs were cooked so that the yolk was runny--just as I had ordered.
The hash browns were brown, again not burned, and had an excellent flavor.
The egg sandwich on a biscuit was also outstanding.
The service was friendly. The coffee was fresh, not burned and had been recently made. Moreover, my cup never got empty before being filled again.
When it gets busy, there can be a wait and staffing is limited. No doubt, this restaurant, like many others, has had a problem finding employees to work, especially when serving an early morning breakfast.
Southern Egg Cafe is a new restaurant. It is worth the effort to locate it and give it a try. I highly...
