I have not been to Pepes since high school because where I moved to did not have them. I was helping a friend with some work in Roseland and saw this place. I ordered the 3 taco meal with steak and onions. Ok, it was delicious. My friend who came with me said he goes to other Pepes and something about the food here was extra special. Both of us left happy and loved our food. He even ordered food for his partner and mother to take home. The decor inside is ok. Not super fancy but definitely a mexican-american vibe. Lighting was dark and for such a tiny building I could see it feeling cramped if the pace was packed (we were the only ones there on Sunday at 2pm during a thunderstorm). The location to me was bizarre as it is right in the middle of a residential area blocks away from the main business strip in the area. Also, the adjacent parking lot was blocked off and we had to park on the street which had plenty to offer but felt odd. Maybe this is a secret Pepes the locals don't want outsiders to know about. Also, there were no alcoholic drinks on the menu so food, soda fruit ices are it. I'm giving 4 stars because of parking and lighting, but the food was great and the man that took our order was super friendly even if he had...
Read moreI ordered a Mayan Dinner along with a Chicken Tamale; and most of my food except the Chicken Enchilada and Chicken Tostada Suiza tasted spoiled or stale. The Steak taco and Chihuahua Cheese both had a foul odor when I bit into it, immediately I spit it out. The rice, refried beans, and Chicken Tamale; did not look fresh and appeared as though they had been cooked days ago and re-warmed. Overall, I was very disappointed with the quality of the food I received for the price I paid almost $20. In addition, there was one customer in the restaurant when I walked in to place this order. Pepe's has to...
Read moreAs a kid there wasn't a better Mexican restaurant...but I guess all good things come to an end. This place sucks now and I've given them chance after chance just because of the history. I went there yesterday (9/26/17) and ordered the fiesta combination and it was just terrible. The food was just bunched up and overlapping so I couldn't tell what was what, the tamale was hard like it was old and re-heated, and the beans tasted burnt. If I have a taste for Mexican food and don't have time to go to Uncle Julio's...I'll hit Roseland pizza/tacos on 115th down the hill. R.I.P Pepe's...
