A quick heads up that this place is CASH ONLY. They don't tell you this over the phone. There is an ATM inside (it charges a $3 fee.) Be careful when ordering online as they jack up the prices by almost double for a lot of items. The interior is a dump which makes you wonder about the cleanliness of the kitchen as well as the condition of the food they are serving. They don't even give you a receipt when buying things. Everything about this place seems shady yet my nostalgia for the Sunny Sub on Madison & Laramie's superb Philly steaks convinced me to order.
The cashier knows the drill so they give you time to go to the ATM after they give you the total. The catfish dinner comes with fries, toasted french bread and a salad. The salad even comes with onions and sport peppers. The double gyro cheese burger comes with just fries. Everything comes with a soda as well. You have the option of adding on lemon pepper. My food was done in under 10 minutes. The gyro cheeseburger has a generous amount of gyro meat on it, but is extremely messy. The catfish is softly fried to a golden brown, but they need to do a better job of either packing it or drying it after cooking because it was soggy as well as the entire brown bag consumed by meat sweats by the time I got home. The food is great although there is a huge issue. I don't know if it's the catfish or burger, but after eating just a small bite I almost immediately felt sick & would have to go lie down. I tried again later and the same thing happened. That's not the best sign to say the least and confirmed my earlier thoughts about the state of the kitchen.
Overall, I doubt I'll be back considering the terrible first experience. Looking at their health scores they've failed multiple times in the past two years and have violations for unclean food surfaces as well as surfaces in general, not preventing contamination, having rats, insects (most likely roaches,) etc. It seems like they barely avoided being shutdown by the health department in 2023 for ongoing violations. I wish I would've looked at this beforehand because I would've...
Read moreSunny Sub is about what you would expect from a neighborhood restaurant. one thing that stood out from the jump was the service staff. Everyone there seems friendly and upbeat which, to be honest, was kind of a surprise. The menu is a collection of norms like pizza puffs, burgers, subs and such. I haven't had many things from the menu but I can speak on a couple of notables.
I really enjoyed the gyros because the meat wasn't cooked to hard and they didn't drown it in that sauce or give you a little meat and try to compensate that with onions!! (I'm looking at you Nicks!!) I also have to commend them for their chicken tenders I can honestly say that they were some of the best chicken tenders that I've had this side of Raising Canes! They were fresh, crispy and tender. My son ordered some of their chicken wings and he said that they were really good as well.
The place itself is a little dated but it's kind of what you come to expect from a neighborhood restaurant. all-in-all my experiences there have been fine. Based on that I would probably recommend that you at least...
Read moreUsually, these Security-Glass restaurants are questionable...particularly the preparation of French Fries.
The wife and I ordered two double burgers. While the trimmings (lettuce and tomato) has room for improvement, for a Security-Glass restaurant, the burger meat seemed to have a pretty good quality. They were not over-cooked to where they were hard and dried out, and the fries...
Forget those twiggy, branches from McDonald's. Forget those hard, dried fries from other Security Glass restaurants. These fries were great. Not hard twigs, and yet not too greasy. Just right.
Order the meal and get fries and a 12 oz. canned beverage (*they may not have a full soda selection, though)...and we'll...
