Good...god. What a wreck.
I was pleasantly surprised upon first walking into Wasabi. The environment was much nicer than I'd expected, we were greeted by friendly staff, and I found myself thinking we'd be in for a nice dinner. Then things swiftly went downhill.
After the initial menu drop and water pours, we waited 15 minutes for follow-up. And then..half an hour...for half of our food to arrive. Half of it. Two of us received the sushi rolls we had ordered while my wife sat and waited another 10 minutes for her plate. Along with our "starter" which somehow made it out dead last. The server threw a quick "thanks for your patience" at us, and we didn't see her again until it was time to settle the check.
The rolls were unbalanced and my "Kill Bill" was loaded so heavily with tobiko that it dominated any other taste I might have been able to enjoy. The breading on the sweet potato croquette we had ordered (to supposedly start our meal off) reminded me of that found on those old TV dinner fish sticks we ate as kids. I didn't enjoy it then, and I definitely don't enjoy it now. My wife's teriyaki bowl may have been the only dish worth sampling and it was mediocre at best.
Despite the relatively clean and appealing dining room, the bathrooms were downright nasty, and in desperate need of attention. I'm not surprised, however, since given the total lack of attention we were given throughout the evening, I must assume that under-staffing is to blame for this issue as well.
After $34.00 for a truly disappointing experience, I definitely can't recommend Wasabi. I try to give places I write reviews like this for a second chance. When I do, I'll make updates here if there are...
Read moreVery good sushi. We have been struggling to find a good sushi place since moving here a year ago. But I hope we finally found a place. The bad part.. we live in Meridian.
I am pregnant so we got 2 deep fried rolls and then we got the fire bird. Which I also ate but I just took the smoked salmon off the top.
Our deep fried rolls were the tempura Philly and tempura spicy tuna. Both were seriously so good. They came out hot and tasted wonderful and for a good price.
The fire bird was probably the best out of the 3 but I would get all 3 again. It had a wonderful flavor to it that came from having the fire on the outside. And everything went together very nice.
The 1 downside to our visit was we were there right when it opened and so our waitress was busy preparing things for the day. She seemed a little annoyed when we asked for things like spicy mayo and eel sauce. We would be asking for something as she would walk away from the table. It also took a while to get our miso soup. I feel like she got a little more “perky” as we were done but otherwise we just felt like we were a bother.
We will for sure be back, while I am pregnant but for sure after I give birth so I can be open to more rolls!! I hope it continues to live up to the yummy rolls...
Read moreGreat new addition to our neighborhood! Bona fide Japanese! I'm not an expert in Japanese culture or food, so I can't review for authenticity. The sushi is excellent. High quality fish, well balanced rolls, well presented. Sukiyaki was a bit sweet for my taste. I'm not sure if that's authentic or too much adapted for American tastes. Green onions and other veggies were fresh, shiitake excellent, beef a bit dry, good broth. Try the gyoza, they are definitely worth it! House salad was iceberg but the dressing ok. Ambience is well attempted, with suitable art dressing up the diner-style room. The pandemic pickup tables destroy it a little bit, as the traffic makes dine-in somewhat uncomfortable. Our server was friendly but making no attempt to guide us through the Asian customs, or explain anything. Here is an opportunity to improve! Go...
