AJ Family Restaurant — Restaurant in Indian Trail

If I could give MORE stars, I would. My wife and I stumbled across this gem of a diner. We wanted to try some place new for dinner and AJ Family Restaurant, did not disappoint. This place is not flashy on the inside or outside, but it's very clean and comfortable.

Now let's talk about the menu... there's something for everyone. There are Greek items, as well as American fare. My wife and I shared the stuffed grape leaves for an appetizer and it was delicious. For our main course, she had the Athena Chicken Wrap. It looked amazing and I'm kicking myself for not stealing a bite. My dish was the Flounder and Calabash. All I can say is WOW, that was really good. Yes, it was fried, but not greasy. The fries were crisp and the cole slaw was great. At this point, I was stuffed to capacity. However, a fat man finds a way to eat dessert. My wife and I shared the banana pudding. It was a mixture of banana bread, banana pudding, sliced bananas and topped with whipped cream.

Now let's discuss the price. Our bill was $45. The value here is top notch. As for the service.... perfect!!!!!

Whoever owns and runs this place, you are doing an amazing job. We look forward to coming back for dinner as well as trying out...

Having been here 1 previous time when I thought the food was lacking flavor but the coleslaw was decent. I decided to order a quart of coleslaw & 1 order of onion rings to go. My shock when the owner charged me $14.00 for the quart of coleslaw, when I asked him "why is it so expensive whereas the onion rings were only $7.50 for a foam take out container; his condescending response was "well you ordered 2 pints , thats a special order" My bill was $23.57 !!!! NO WONDER THERE WERE NO DINERS THERE @ 5:00PM!!!

I just walked out. Now, when I came home I opened the coleslaw containers & both of them were just a tad over half the container. How GREEDY CAN A PERSON BE??? A head of cabbage is 39 cents a pound & I liked theirs as it only has a drop of mayo in it. Needless to say I will continue going to Sun Valley Cafe where the owners do not rip you off, food is beyond excellent as well as the service. Very reasonable...

Edit: this plate is now known as,.. "Laurie's Plate". It's not on the menu, and It will come out a little different looking each time, but you can order this Mediterranean dish. The food in AJ's reminds me of food that comes out of a New York diner. Portions are terrific. Food was hot . Cooked exactly the way ordered. Matter-of-fact I had a custom meal that I wanted. Pretty much a Greek salad without the lettuce in a platter form. And the chef nailed it exactly to what I was picturing in my mind. He actually said.. "oh, she wants a Greek breakfast". Lol. I should also add the tzatziki sauce and stuffed grape leaves here are just delicious. Also, service here...
