Was looking for a new place to take the fam for my dad's birthday and stumbled across this place after a little research. It's a little outside of downtown Pittsburgh which is what we wanted because navigating and parking was easy 👌
As soon as I walked in I loved the atmosphere. Super cool place and hadn't seen anything like it before. It gave a super cool vibe. I also put in a reservation for 11 and we ended up in a private room - didn't ask for it - but more than appreciated that we were kind of closed off in our own space 👍
Our server was really friendly and on top of everything...giving us details on specials, super on point with service in general, and overall gave an awesome experience. I wish I remembered his name to give a shout-out because I like to give credit where credit is due 👏
I ordered a full meal here - I will say the clam chowder was ok...not bad but nothing spectacular but I'm still giving 5 stars for everything else I stated above and the rest of the food I ordered. I also got shrimp wontons, which I wish I took a picture cause they were unique and texture was on point and flavor, especially the sauce was great. My main course was there cottage pie, their spin off shepherds pie but with a super flavorful gravy and shaved ribeye with mashed potatoes on top. Everyone at the table wanted it as soon as it arrived and it was awesome! I got a slice of chocolate cake to go which was also really good too 😋
I'd definitely come back for the atmosphere and to try more of their menu options because I don't think I'd be disappointed - Thank you for a great evening especially on my...
Read moreI had reservations for Saturday at 4:30 on Mothers day weekend. We were celebrating my daughters graduation from college and mothers day. As we were walking into the restaurant a hostess that was running late for work cut us off and then let the door slam in our face., I was helping an 89 year old into the building and this was a rude start. We were then sat at a table by the entrance to the bar where there was a steady flow of staff zipping past at all times, it was impossible to relax, but there were plenty of other tables open, in fact the restaurant was virtually empty. I had to ask the waitress what the specials were, Had she told me sooner, i would have ordered different appetizers, because the ones on the special menu were upscale, and i would have preferred them. The food was mediocre when it was served compared to the way it normally is, and was way over salted and cold. We also ordered desert, the pecan balls were melted because they took 20 minutes to be delivered and must have sat while the server was no where to be found, then my wife's spoon was dirty and had someone else's dinner baked onto it... not good. server never apologized, never saw a manager. Do not come here if you expect good service and above average food or you will surely be disappointed. I have been here many times before with couples and friends, we even had my daughters rehearsal dinner here, but really...The Hartwood is a let down now. Save your money for a...
Read moreBetter than "Blah" but just "So-So." It was a very busy Tuesday night that felt more like a Saturday evening and the service was still outstanding and there was plenty of staff and they did not bug you and always found the perfect time to check in. The food came out quickly too and was presented well but there is an element of specialness that you get from the website and from driving past that is missing in the dining experience. I felt like I was eating in an old lady's house down the street and sitting at her kitchen table. It does not have the feeling of being quaint, intimate, or special. It just felt like a bunch of strangers sitting in a big, old, vacant house together. It's actually weird, for me anyway. I did hear the people sitting around us all rave about the food though. Their mashed potatoes are real and they are very good. But, I could not even force myself to drink the drink I ordered and when I ate the main meal I was more grateful that I got through it instead of wishing there was more. The coffee was hot but very weak. Their apple crisp is made with very thin sliced apples and I do prefer chunky apple crisp. The menu is small and that okay but when it is that small everything needs to be excellent and it should feel like something you cannot make at home your self. I could make all that myself so it's just that feeling of not being special. They do have very nice table cloths and candles at the table too and...
