Located in John Wayne Airport (Santa Ana/Orange County), I always seem to find a way to stop by the Breakaway Bar & Grill before my flight..
Here's what I've had from my last couple of visits in 2021
Spicy Wings- decent wings for an airport resto. Generous with the meat an pretty spicy sauce. If you're going carb free, the spicy wings will work for you.. Angus Burger- This is a pretty tasty cheeseburger served with skinny fries. They cooked it at a perfect medium rare for me. This was the perfect dish for me before I started downing IPAs and tequila to kill time...
Speaking of which.. the draft beer and shot for me went like this: Goose IPA + Don Julio Blanco $18.49 THe entrees are in the $15-$17 range...pricey? Yes, but you already knew that because you're in the airport right? hehe
I love how you seat yourself and servers always stopped by almost immediately after I sat down. They would check on me and were overall generally very friendly. There's a full bar and plenty of flat screen TVs throughout to kill time watching the game. I like sitting in the booths in the back to watch airplanes land and take off. =)
This has always been a nice safe option for me whenever I'm at John Wayne Airport. Always use a designated...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI wasn't sure how the TSA lines would be on a Sunday so I arrived at the airport earlier than normal. As I had so much time to kill and it was Sunday, so a bloody mary was obviously a necessity.
Since I was alone I pulled up a stool at the bar. The service was pretty fast and the bar staff was nice enough. When I ordered my bloody mary I was told that I could get a double shot for 50% off the second shot. This was also what would get my drink made in a pint glass. I went for it as enjoying a bloody mary in one of those short glasses is just wrong! The mary was pretty solid and came with several garnishes. I did have to add additional tobasco...but this is a usual for me.
There were multiple televisions in the small bar and they also had a few outlets at the bar for plugging in your electronics. Overall my experience here was quite alright, the only thing that kills me is the price I paid for my bloody mary. I know I'm trapped in the terminal and have limited options as a consumer, but come on! Forking out $17 with tip for one drink is insanity, the second shot was half off too. If you are tight on cash I'd caution asking the price of a drink...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI was waiting to board my flight at gate 19 which is right next to the restaurant. Previously I purchased a meal from McDonalds and could not find seating by the gate because the flight was full. I walked around to the Ducks Breakaway area to eat as there were plenty of seats available. After I sat down with my food I was confronted by a woman who seemed to be a manager asking if I wanted a menu. "No ma'am" was my response. Then she stated, "You know this is a dine in restaurant only?" I began to answer "No I didn't" but she began to walk away quickly. "Do I need to move?" I asked. She stopped and turned to say, "No, but if we get busy, we are going to move you." I proceeded to gather my things and leave anyway.
This situation was an honest misunderstanding. I would have been happy to move for her if she would have simply asked. A little politeness would have been greatly appreciated instead of the condescending additude. I understand you have a business to run, but please be polite to people even if they are not...
