Second time reviewing this. I stopped coming because the quality had degraded and it was really expensive. I heard they had a new owner, so I went to try it again.
TL;DR - not good, they sell a tres leches cake that isn't.
Not good, at all. I asked the girl behind the counter what she would recommend and she said the tres leches cake. That happens to be my favorite type of cake. It also is a type of cake that most bakers don't get right.
I know it's tough to make but it is better if you don't offer it, if you can't make it. I could have tried something else and maybe this review would be great. But I was inclined to try it and the recommendation convinced me.
The cake turned out to be probably the worst tres leches cake I have ever tried. If you aren't familiar with it, then you wouldn't know that a Tres Leches Cake is supposed to be moist. No, let me rephrase that, it is supposed to be wet.
The way it is prepared calls for liquid to be poured on it. And frankly it becomes a sloppy mess at some point as you are eating it. But that is how its supposed to be, wet. When you finish a slice of it, to give you an idea, there should be liquid left over on your plate or some moisture at least.
The cake I tried was as dry as could be. I was so dissapointed. The flavor was also lacking, and as I was eating it, I bit into a tough part of the cake. It felt like fondant, but there isnt suppposed to be fondant on a cake like this. As I dissected the cake to figure out what I bit into, I couldn't find the source of whatever that was. Then I just got grossed out, about 20 minutes later, I still have a nasty thick after taste in my mouth... not sure why.
I really want to cheer for this place, they're local and I much rather see independent businesses thrive here instead of big chain brands, but I also can't recommend you go here until they fix this. If this happens with this cake, I can only assume that they'll butcher other classics like red velvet, or dutch double chocolate.
I was planning on getting some macarons for my daughter too, but I didnt because they didn't look right. They were built sloppily, and besides the pretty colors, they didnt look appetizing, not for their price.
If you want to make your own creations and have great recipes and ideas, then go for it! I'd love to try new things... but don't mislead us like this.
Old review 4/5 When the cakes are fresh (same day) they're awesome. Try to come back when a fresh one has been put out on display and that's what you want. All the other snack stuff is really good too, like cookies and...
Read moreI truly don’t like putting bad reviews for small business, even less during Covid it I was taken for a foul by this place.
I usually get all my cakes from the same spot in DTLA, but the place was closed and I recently moved to OC. It was my friend 30th birthday and I wanted a cute, good tasting chocolate cake with a printed picture of her on top of it. A simple cute and original birthday cake.
When I went to pick up the cake, I was in shock, horrify by what I was seeing and I almost cried. I asked the person if this was some kind of joke, and after her saying no, I asked if she could fix it somehow or make it prettier. She said “no sorry”.
They basically took one of their basic $36 cake that they sell all the time and put a picture on top of it. Cutting it badly, could even center it and add NO finishes, decorations etc.. and charges me $60 for it.
I was so ashamed of it, that I ended up ordering cute cupcake to my friend surprise birthday. You can see the picture for yourself. This bakery posted all nice picture on their website and IG but clearly it’s not their creation because no professional will let a cake be presented to ANYONE like that (both of my parent are chefs in France..)
On top of everything, before posting the review I emailed the owner to let her know about my disappointment, embarrassment and I got absolutely I answer.
Save yourself some time, money and hurtful cake pick up and find another bakery if you...
Read moreI received a half dozen box of their cupcakes for my birthday that was delivered via Postmates. The box was dropped off as contact less, so I didn't see the handler.
I brought the sweet treats in and when I opened the box, everything had shifted and all the cupcakes were upside down. I literally LOL'd and messaged my friend to thank her but also let her know the delivery was not very smooth. I just picked up each one and set it back into the shallow holes in the box.
The mini cupcakes were SO tasty - Vanilla, Strawberry & Cream, Cookies & Cream, Chocolate, White Chocolate Raspberry and Caramel. They were filled with a custard or some type of cream topped with frosting. The frosting is very sweet, so I removed it since the bite-sized cupcakes had a creamy filling that wasn't too sweet.
The box has instructions to serve them room temperature, but I was often impatient and just ate them straight from the fridge lol....
