Edit: After contacting the restaurant directly (via Facebook), management was very apologetic and offered an opportunity for us to try the restaurant again. She said she would share the information about inattentive wait-service with her staff. It could be that the response to the Groupon was more intense than expected.
Luckily, we visited using a Groupon, so we weren't out a ton of money, but we were very disappointed with our first experience at Mama's Daughters Diner @ the Plano location. We ordered two home-cooking staples, thinking it would be a good way to gauge the quality of most of their food. My husband's chicken fried steak was tasteless (although the gravy was good), and my meatloaf was just incredibly salty. The sides we chose tasted like they were store bought... or, in the case of the candied yams, not even as good as store-bought. The salad greens were fresh (and they do have the tasty ranch that isn't super mayonnaisey, so I was happy about that), and the bread was quite good. So maybe we should have made a meal out of bread and salad! We went, though, because all the reviews we'd read said they had great pie. And... at 6:00 PM they were completely out of pie. How can you be out of pie two hours before you close? The server we worked with was unapologetic and unavailable-- we were never asked if we needed anything else, if we wanted dessert (we had to flag her down to ask about the pie), or if our food was up to par. It was busy, so that may have been part of why she paid us no attention, but she was incredibly attentive to the table of older women seated right next to us, so it was hard to give her the benefit of the doubt by the time we left.I'm just surprised our experience was so unfavorable, since so many others have really enjoyed this restaurant. We will NOT be returning. For homestyle cooking, we much prefer The Diner on Beltline, near Marsh (formerly Norma's Cafe) and...
Read moreMama’s Daughters’ Diner in Irving (2412 W Shady Grove Rd) is a cozy, family-run gem that nails classic Southern comfort food with a homey vibe that makes you feel like you’re eating at grandma’s house. The staff is fantastic—warm, friendly, and quick to make you feel like a regular. Their breakfast menu is where they truly shine, and the waffles topped with whipped cream and strawberries? Absolute perfection, fluffy, crispy, and so delicious I’m still thinking about them. For lunch, they keep things fresh with daily specials that rotate dishes, keeping every visit exciting. The chicken fried fried steak is tender with a golden, crunchy crust and rich cream gravy that’s pure comfort on a plate. The fried chicken is crispy, juicy, and packed with flavor, while the pot roast is melt-in-your-mouth good. Fridays are a treat with their salmon patties—savory, perfectly seasoned, and one of my all-time favorites. Their burgers are solid, too, with that classic diner taste. Don’t skip the homemade rolls or cornbread, which come with most entrees and are a highlight on their own. The only downside is the seating. It’s mostly fixed booths, which gives it that nostalgic diner feel, but it’s a challenge for accessibility. There are only two or three tables with chairs, and they’re always taken, so my handicapped mother can’t join me here since she struggles with booth seating. If they could add more accessible tables, it’d be perfect. Still, for anyone craving hearty, homestyle cooking in a welcoming atmosphere, Mama’s Daughters’ is a must-visit. Support this local treasure for a true taste of...
Read moreHad very good food i was talking so highly of how good the food was, although waitresses were arguing very loud the entire time we were sitting at our table walking back and forth arguing about side work, our waitress maybe came to our table 3 times one for taking our order one for dropping our food off and one for the checks. after we had left we realized we had left our sunglasses on the table(that were ray bans definitely not cheap sunglasses) we called immediately within 5 minutes of leaving and they stated my sunglasses weren’t there. We told them we were gonna go back super fast to look and were told we weren’t allowed to go back bc they had closed. it was 3:01PM when i had called. We pulled over and checked the entire car to make sure we weren’t mistaken. The glasses were no where in the car, im 100% sure someone who worked there took them or didn’t even bother to look. the lady who answered the phone we had just checked out with and she was complaining about having to do ANYTHING while we stood there and ran our cards, so doubt when i called she even looked probably stood there on her phone and had me on hold. Poor customer service, the only thing that was semi good about this place was the food and it tasted like it was all bought from a quick shop. Will NEVER be returning disrespectful across all waitress only one who was nice was the older lady...
