Dear Giannini's -- I regret that we will not visit your restaurant again. The first time we came to dine -- we enjoyed the experience. The food was good and the menu promised some variety for a future visit. The service was decent and the prices were appropriate for the area. Cut to the other night and things just fell apart when they didn't need to.
We arrived just before 7p behind a table of 4 who essentially sat down at the same time -- maybe a minute before us. There were four other tables besides the bar area who were in various stages of their dining.
The service was apologetically slow and the young waitress was friendly. She opened our wine and we waited patiently to place our order. We ordered an appetizer and our entrees. We got bread and butter pretty quickly. Our appetizer, the basil and pesto Bruschetta, took awhile to arrive, but we weren't watching the clock.
The "polenta board" arrived next -- not bad. The meat sauce was really good, but the polenta lacked any seasoning. Now we were starting to take notice of the delays in the kitchen. Meanwhile we watched the table of 4 get their entrees. The soup and salad arrived with more apologies. And the table of four was just finishing up their entrees.
Soup and salad were cleared -- our bottle of wine was 2/3rds gone. More apologies came and we watched the table of four leave -- now we were the only table waiting for food that we could see. The other two tables that remained had paid and were just chatting. We looked at the watch -- nearly 90 minutes. By this time -- it was dark -- late -- it was a Sunday night. It's now past 815p. No word on when the entrees would arrive, just more apologies and "it's coming".
So we asked for our waitress -- 5 minutes passed. Waitress comes back and we ask to cancel our meal -- we'll pay for what we've eaten and we'll come back another time -- no sense in dragging this out. The young waitress called out across the restaurant for the manager (or owner -- whoever the woman was). She came by and said "your entrees are ready, you don't want them??? They're just finishing the pasta". Well... I'm sorry to say if they're still finishing something, they're not ready.
See, Giannini's -- this is where there was an opportunity to reach out--to apologize by saying "Hey -- let me waive that corkage -- would you mind waiting another 5 minutes? Hey let me pick up that appetizer for you. Hey -- would you like me to box that up to go -- I'll take off one of the entrees for you." There are a number of responses. But instead, you chose to storm off without saying a word.
When we next saw our waitress, she dropped the bill at the table like a dive bomber. $55 for Bruschetta and corkage and items included with the price of the entrees we never received. Huh? While we settled on $40 plus a 20% tip for the waitress (it wasn't her fault that you threw a tantrum nor that the kitchen was incompetently under water/slow/whatever the excuse).
Giannini's survived Covid -- they've been a facet of our community (Yes -- did you know we were locals?) for decades. But maybe it won't if this is the way customers are treated. Perhaps it shouldn't if this is the quality of service and food that are delivered now on a menu that's much smaller than it used to be. And certainly -- if you're not the owner, you probably should find a new line of work because this ain't it, sweetheart.
So many chances to turn things around -- we would have been back and just shrugged it off to an "off night" -- but you closed the door on that for good. And I'm sorry -- because the food was good -- at least the first time. Maybe i'm looking at this through an overly optimistic and nostalgic lens. Perhaps the pathetic amount of salad mix drenched in oily dressing, the bland polenta, limited menu and Bruschetta that doesn't even have tomato on it (yes I get that it's pesto -- but basil + garlic like tomatoes!) are all signs that Giannini's has outlived its contribution to the community.
Sell the building -- go retire. It...
Read moreWhat I’m about to write has no prejudice or bias against this restaurant and staff. I know it’s been a difficult 12 months, California policy’s have left this states small businesses to die. But please. Don’t cut corners to save pennies. This review will make you mad, upset, and all the emotions. But it’s truth. I’m writing this for you to get your stuff in order. I’m a chef, background is 15 years in the field, went onto a Johnson and Wales Culinary institute and served admirals and foreign ambassadors in the US Coast Guard. This is going to be a nicer review than how we review ourselves in the service.
Now that I said a gist of my background lemme begin by saying, I do not appreciate the Stouffer’s Lasagna, $11 beer bottles, oil drenched salads (nothing was homemade Italian dressing on this), reheated (how old?) lentil soup without the lentils, standing water cooked polenta-unseasoned, water down chopped garlic from a jar on my steak romana drenched in a 50/50 blend of olive oil? Was not pure olive oil I can tell you that much, shrimp scampi with only 5 shrimp no pasta with mushrooms? I would not be proud of that dish. Cheese tortellini clearly from two things, reheated pre-made tortellini and a dry goods “just add milk/or water packet”. Oddly the calamari was in strips (laziness prevents them from being circles) and wasn’t an appetizer item take $10 bucks off and you have an appetizer item. It was oddly not rubber because of expectations, so good job on cooking length oil is old and needs changing out. Still not enough for an actual meal. Please for the love of everything I want you to succeed. But if you’re not getting this “kick in the rear get your stuff together feedback” then you will fail. Please succeed. You have chosen one of the easiest cuisines out there. Master your pasta making. Use 00 flour and not all purpose flour. You can flip this around so fast. But until then, I will not be subjecting my colon to another detox. This review will be updated when you have updated. If you strive for fresh and cook fresh and no more of this easy fast shortcuts that do nothing for you, NOTHING, then I will update this review. My star status should be a 1 but your waitress did everything she could, she’s not a chef. Waitress deserves 5 stars, food is 1 star, showing support to this country and services being rendered all 50 stars.
This will not be easy for you to read but your current “cook” is not a chef. He/she is screwing you over. Either get it together or fail miserably. Actual fresh Ravioli, fresh tortellini, fresh pasta sheets for lasagna is not hard. You are 100% lazy mr./mrs. cook. Research/study and implement. And please update your menu to reflect what you’re really serving people so you don’t screw up their expectations! You leave too much for the imagination which will bite you in the rear. You just put names of the dish/dishes and take shortcuts on that too. I understand you’re keeping your overhead costs/inventory/and skill level down on your menu for your cook. But please retrain, and test them. If they cannot make fresh pasta sheets, without a recipe, within 20 minutes then they are not your cook. If he/she wants to be, then hook them up, give them everything they need to succeed. But tricking the public into think they’re getting a high grade experience better than Olive Garden and not “Stouffer’s”... literally “Stouffer’s” is what pisses all of us off. I’m not hiding behind this review, I can take this whole thing and show up in person and say it to anyone face to face. I want you to succeed, not suck. We’re die hard locals, we miss what it used to...
Read moreThis place is hit and miss. We waited 8 months after moving here to finally try this place.
First visit was ah-mazing!
Service: We got a great server (who we recognized from 88 burgers next door as she works there as well). She was attentive, knowledgeable, friendly and had hustle.
Food: this too was 5-star. All but the canned vegetable soup served in an outdated Tupperware bowl. The carbonara is delicious... the best I've ever had! Their salads and bread are great too. To end a great dinner we grabbed a cappuccino and cheesecake because we didn't want our great experience to end. We left excited to go back.
Visit 2: On this night I took my 16-year son and his girlfriend here for dessert. We waited for-ev-er to even get acknowledged once we sat down. The owner lady didnt seem to care that we went for an extended period of time without even so much as a glass of water, instead she sat at the table next to us and started partaking in food and wine with a party of about 8 that was there. I was finally able to order the cappuccino and cheesecake while the teens ordered icecream... this process was painful and I felt frowned upon for only ordering dessert! Awaiting the bill was a process in itself. When we went to pay our server was up there trying to sort out their tickets as they use an archaic paper system for ticketing. Service: horrible Food: Great
Final visit: The husband and I decided again to go for dessert. I wanted the carbonara so bad but pasta hurts my stomach and I can only eat it occasionally. So we went for a mini date night dessert.
I ordered my usual.. the cappuccino and cheesecake. Let me tell you they have the best cheesecake. It is not made in house but it's so good!
Service: The server took her time serving us water I dirty glasses. When she came she seemed confused that we were only ordering dessert. This is the second time I've felt judged for only order dessert. It's not like people are knocking down the door to get in. Annoying. But even more annoying is that she couldn't tell us what their $15.00 dessert for two was. When asked she replied, "it's some custard thing"... um... it's a big ticket item on your menu and you dont know? So we ordered my usual and my husband got icecream.
Ugh.
Both our coffees were so gross. My cappuccino was the most vile coffee I've ever had. It was bitter, it was awful. I sent it back and the same exact taste came back with the remake. It's almost like their machine needs to be cleaned, im not sure as I'm no barista. When we left we decided we will never be back.
Its sad.. I want to support local businesses although I feel like if you're not a known local around here with roots they could care less about your business. None the less I love their pasta so I wanted to love this place. It just isnt worth the cost when combined with the inconsistencies and poor service.
I was even willing to look past their outdated decor and dated processes. They do NOT even have beer on tap. We have an AMAZING local brewery (Amador Brew) that should be carried on draft. But they do not have draft beers. Remodel this place, train your employees, and value your customers both new and old. Oh and clean...
