I placed an order for a sandwich at 12:15. When my sandwich was not here, I called at 1:09 to see why. I was told she would check and call back that she left about 30 minutes ago, but would call and let me know. The lady called back at 1:12 said she was on the way. I called again at 1:30. This time I spoke to Mark he said that it was out to be delivered same as before. I told him to just cancel my order. I literally live less than 3 blocks from the store and my sandwich has now been out for delivery for over an hour. As I told him to cancel it the delivery girl pulled up in my yard, yes in the yard not the driveway. I sent my son out to get the sandwich because I am on the phone with Mark. I should have sent the sandwich back because now it is cold a Philly steak and cheese is not good cold. If they were busy all they had to do was say delivery will be over an hour I would have walked there. Instead I paid with a credit card with a tip and got a cold sandwich an hour and 20 minutes later with nothing but excuses. What makes it so bad as we have had good experiences before the excuses really upset me. *My money was refunded as promised with an apology. We went to Surfwich today for lunch (a month later) and the sandwiches were delicious and served hot. I would steer away from their delivery but the food it self...
Read moreChange the meat or thickness of the meat on the cheese steaks and it could be awesome. I've eaten about a thousand cheese steaks across the country with most of them occurring in Philly. I know cheese steaks PERIOD.
I give Surfwich an A for effort, but a B-/C+ in final grade for the result. They don't use the traditional cheese steak meat that's purchased in bulk by other shops. It seems like Surfwich slices their own meat which happens to be leaner and probably higher quality. However, when lean meat is not sliced thin enough and cooked well done, then the meat becomes tough and chewy and that is the #1 problem with their cheese steaks. They don't use the authentic Amoroso rolls from Philly, but they use a comparable roll that's soft and the way it's prepared (outer part of the roll is slightly crispy) gives a good result.
Thus, the problem about eating the cheese steak at Surfwich was that each bite required a lot of effort to chew and the taste and texture was not up to par. Again it comes down to the kind of meat and thickness of it. They need to either change to the normal greasy meat or slice their current meat to a thinness that works.
Until then, I'll continue to eat my cheese steaks at Bongiorno's on Mayport...
Read moreYesterday, my wife and I drove to Jacksonville, so I could do my TSA PreCheck interview (1 hour and 37 minutes away). Since I love cheesesteaks, I googled 'best cheesesteak Jacksonville', and I saw the rave reviews for Surfwiches. And, let me tell you... Their cheesesteaks are absolutely amazing - probably one of the best I have ever had in my life. And, my amazing wife (I definitely married up) ordered their patty melt, because I couldn't decide which to order. And, oh my god... Their patty melt was soooooooo amazing too. I'm so glad we came here. The food was amazing, the staff were super friendly and the restaurant was kept nice and clean. But, don't let the outside fool you. This place is a hidden gem. This place is definitely worth the drive. This place took me 43 minutes out of my way, but it was so worth it. Going forward, anytime I'm in the Jacksonville area, I will definitely come back here, and I don't care how far it takes me out of my way. You definitely have to try this place. You definitely won't be...
