Van Dee's Ice Cream Shoppe — Restaurant in Johnston

After having had intentions to visit this place since we moved to the area two years ago, we finally went tonight. They had an impressive menu, albeit rather confusing to sort through. My family of five placed one order each. The order-taker seemed impatient and seemed to want to rush us, not knowing (or caring) that we were first-time visitors. She asked clarifying questions (like what flavor of ice cream we wanted with our treats) in rapid-fire and in terminology, which made our deciding and answering her clumsier. Because of the clumsiness and confusion, she wound up getting four of our five orders inaccurate, even though she affirmed (definitely falsely) that they were correct. The taste of the treats was very good. The bananas on mine were quite overripe, but the ice cream, hot fudge, and whipped cream were all excellent. We are glad that we went to this place to sate our curiosity about what it serves and how it works. However, since this visit was significantly disappointing, we will almost certainly never return, simply owing to the reality that many places serve great ice cream without all the off-putting aspects of the experience as we...

A group of 7 of us met here for ice cream yesterday, not realizing they weren't open yet for the season. As we stood there discussing what to do instead, someone came outside and was surprised to see people in his parking lot. After we told him we didn't realize he wouldn't be open for business yet, he offered to turn on the machines and make something for us anyway.

One machine he didn't turn on though was the cash register, he didn't charge us at all actually. Instead, he told us to come back once they open and leave some money in the tip jar for the people working there.

In the search for the best blizzard, snowstorm, blitz, twirl, etc., I tried Van Dee's on a Monday night. No drive-thru but the carryout line was not too long and my order was made quickly. You order at their outside window. They only take cash which I was prepared but credit card is much more convenient.

I ordered a small chocolate blitz with peanut butter cups. The chocolate ice cream was good and I definitely can taste the peanut butter. I wished there were more chunks or at least larger chunks of the peanut butter cups. Maybe adding chocolate chips could improve it?
