This was very difficult to review. My husband and I went for date night and to celebrate an occasion. Neither of us had ever been there before. The service was absolutely AMAZING!!! Best we had ever experienced. Our waitress was on point. My drink was never empty. She was very kind and accommodating. The atmosphere was great, I love that there are little walls (similar to horse stables) that separate you from other tables. Adds a little sound barrier that drowns out other people's conversations which is great for a nice dinner out. Now for the food. Honestly, we were not impressed. The portions were big and great which was the best part. However, we got the steak and it came out raw when we ordered medium, they took it back and cooked it longer which it was then correct. BUT you have to special request to have any seasoning put on your steak which I think is a little strange. We requested seasoning and I couldn't tell. It was very, very bland. Which was disappointing for a 16oz steak that is $35. I was hoping for better flavor. We had a huge baked potato which was good but we had to pay extra for a second side. I like steak, potatoes, and a veggie personally. So we ordered the green beans. They tasted, very heavily, like FISH. They were not good. I took two bites and could not eat more. My husband likes fish but did not like the green beans. He also took two bites and didn't finish. So, great atmosphere and service is wonderful but the food needed more seasoning and avoid the same surfaces as fish, unless that taste is intentional, in which case, they should warn you of that on the menu somehow. No one bites into a green bean and expects a fishy vinegar flavor. We haven't decided if we will return or not because its hard to want to try other entrees if we don't like the side dish. Compliments to the waitress we had though, she was phenomenal! Give it try and see...
Read moreHigh hopes for a local steakhouse we had never been to. Lived in Kansas City most of my life. BBQ and steak are staples here. Common knowledge…right? For my family… BBQ and steak are a frequent flyer. I had decently standard expectations for quality and level of tastiness based on pricing and positive ranting reviews. I have been to steak and chop houses alike all over the country. We have experienced five star dining during family vacations to different countries and have a standard baseline for these types of places. Service was amazing. Very welcoming and quick service. The food is subpar. We ordered from the dinner menu. I ordered The Playboy Strip. It wasn’t properly cooked and had to be sent back. Not a huge deal. It happens. When it returned to the table it was still poorly cooked. They recooked the steak I sent back. Fat was not rendered properly and was undercooked. The Gouda Mac and Cheese bites are amazing. Their home made Texas toast was delicious. Loaded baked potatoes perfect. Do not order steak. I’m unsure how they have any repeat customers who order steak. It was this bad.
UPDATE POST THE OWNERS RESPONSE…
Way to backhand an apology. You can’t be serious. I ordered an $80 steak for lunch. It didn’t need to be cooked perfectly. It needed to be cooked and served to match the cost. It was extremely far from decent and very far from perfect. I was not expecting a perfect steak… what in my review expressed I expected a perfect steak? Where did you get perfect from properly? $400 for lunch for five what would you expect. Tasty and worth returning at minimum. Are you buying what you have actually said in your response? Just to be clear… you are saying the steak can’t be cooked properly because it’s too thick. This happens sometimes? But you still charge the customer $80 for said steak when it...
Read moreWhile visiting Kansas City, we decided to visit Jess & Jim’s Steakhouse based on recommendations we had gotten from several friends. It’s located in the Martin City area which in the southeast of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Jess & Jim’s has been in business for decades and you can’t do that without providing high quality meals at a reasonable price.
We went early on a weekday evening and were seated immediately. The interior looks like the old-time steakhouse; it could use some updating. We started with some drinks. My wife had Jess & Jim’s New Old Fashioned which she enjoyed. I like craft-brewed beers and while the selection wasn’t extensive, it was nicely varied. Aside from the usual selections on-tap, they had a selection from Martin City Brewing which is located just down the street. I chose the Hard Way IPA, As an appetizer, we chose the fried mushrooms; they were served with ranch dressing and were very good.
For our entrées, my wife had the 8 oz. filet mignon whereas I had the 12 oz. ribeye. For sides, we chose a twice baked potato and steamed vegetables. Our meals were delightful. Our filet and steak were done to perfection – the outside was nicely seared while being cooked to the doneness we chose (medium-rare). The meat was tender and flavorful. We split the twice baked potato and were glad we did – it was more than we could both eat. The steamed vegetables were good but unremarkable. We had a great dining experience and glad we took up our friends on their recommendation.
Our waitress was attentive and helpful; she was adept at placing the order so each course came out at the right time. If you happen to be in the Kansas City area and are looking for great steaks, I can recommend Jess & Jim’s Steakhouse as one of the best you’ll find...
