The course was beautiful and what you'd expect for $300 but it definitely isn't the best. The greens were a little slow. The wind was brutal on the uphill par 5.
But now for the real reason i rate this 3 stars. The Marshall that we encountered was seriously rude. It was almost as if he was upset that we showed up to play. There was no one else on the course and me and my buddy are pretty good players. So we finished in 2.5 hrs. We weren't trying to play fast or anything, it just turned out that way.
Well this was the 4th golf course we had played in Hawaii thus far and everyone was really chill and laid back. None of the courses were busy, i guess because we kept playing on weekdays at really expensive courses. Either way we went around for 9 more holes and before we could even tee up the ball that Marshall was on us yelling as we had just stolen his car. threatening to "call the cops" and saying all kinds of crazy stuff. I just chuckled and said "alright man how much do you want for another 9 holes?" He said "$300" I knew then that he was just being a jerk and wanted us to leave.
Ok so here's my beef, I knew what we were doing wasn't "right" but at the same time was it really that big of a deal? We had already paid for an incredibly expensive green fee, rented clubs, bought shirts, hats and crazy expensive marked up golf balls. If they're really that worried about money, then that's my bad i guess. But We finished in half the time and there was no one around. If they really cared that much then that's fine, but for the Marshall to speed up on us yelling was honestly crazy. He could have simply said "hey you know you guys gotta pay if you wanna play more holes". To which I would have responded "you're right, you got us, how much?" I doubt the course really cared at all I think that Marshall was extremely uptight and took his job way too seriously.
TLDR; Course very nice, Marshall lost his sh!& after we tried to...
Read moreBeautiful and generally well-maintained course and practice facility. Unlike other reviews, I found most bunkers to have enough sand (had a few plugged lies!), but some others looked pretty bare. Greens werenât too fast, which is good because the winds would take the ball right off the green otherwise.
It is expensive, so be warned. That being said, expensive doesnât have to mean stuffy and antiquated. My wife wanted to ride along and wore an appropriate ankle-length sundress with nice sandals. Upon checking in, one woman behind the desk gave us a healthy dose of judgment saying âyour wife canât join because her shoulders are showing, and she isnât in golf attire.â Never mind 1. Probably over half of the womenâs apparel in the pro shop doesnât have a collar and/or exposes plenty of shoulder, 2. The course is maybe 50% booked, 3. There is a hiking trail down 15-17 where anyone wearing anything can walk, and 4. this isnât the Vatican. After debating whether to cancel all together and the two other very nice pro shop members talking to us, they agreed to let her join. And you know what? All was fine. The starter was super friendly, as was the cart woman, and all other staff. To be safe, I checked with Kapalua to make sure that clothing she wore is fine for my upcoming round at the Plantation Course and it is! And they were very friendly about it.
So go for the challenge of a windy course, pretty views, and Hawaii golf! But, while I want to emphasize almost every staff member was friendly, you may encounter a less than welcoming atmosphere from at least one person in the shop. I hope they work on their policies as they are in a resort area and so many new golfers have come to the sport since COVID. Currently, they leave a lot...
Read moreIt's a good experience to play this course if the price doesn't bother you. However, I still feel that it is overpriced. They had aerated the greens a week before we played... and the greens were basically unplayable. They offered a $30 discount because of the aerated greens, but that discount wasn't enough. It put a slight damper on the experience because you literally could not roll any putt normally and have any expectation on the speed or whether it would bounce and bumble 3 feet off-line. We still had fun though. Expect wind. Even though we played early in the morning, it was blowing 15-25mph the entire round. It was a 2 to 3-club wind at times when we were going straight into it. The front nine is OK. The back nine has some beautiful views coming down the final 4 holes. Pace of play was actually pretty good. There weren't very many people at all on the course, and we played in under 4 hours. The staff in the clubhouse were great and super friendly. The starter was kind of a curmudgeon. He wasn't very friendly or welcoming. We needed to wait for our ride after we finished our round, so we thought we would go hang-out at the driving range and putting green for a minute while we waited. There was no one at the range. The starter sternly told us that we weren't allowed to hit any balls at the range (as the range was only included for the pre-round warmup). You'd think after paying $200+ to play here, they'd loosen up a little and possibly let us hit a few balls after our round especially considering nobody was...
