We've eaten here three times over the last few months. I'm part of a group that goes out every week to have a mid-afternoon lunch and just chat amongst ourselves. This review is an accumulation of those three times. We always get a couple of cheese and a couple of pepperoni pizzas. Before you read below - I'm looking at this from the point of view of a guy that spent 35 years living in New York and Boston, and was raised in a Sicilian household. First the pizzas: They're very inconsistent in how they're cooked. One time they come out cooked perfectly, the next under or over cooked (burnt) - even within the same order. I prefer thinner NY style pizza, and for the most part that's what these are, except you can get pizzas that vary widely in thickness from one side to the other. I'm not sure how you even do that. As for the taste, they're very much on the bland side. Not much spice in that sauce. I think they just open a large can of pureed tomato, and what comes out is what you get. Nothing more. The cheese can be floating in so much oil you have to soak it up with a napkin. For people who think the oil is authentic or may come from them adding oil in the making of the pizza. It doesn't. It comes from inexpensive, bland cheese. Inexpensive cheese leeches oil when it cooks. It makes sense they use inexpensive ingredients because I hear so many people talk about how "reasonably priced" the pizza is. For this area, the price of the pizza is on the lower side. The restaurant: No matter when we go, it seems like it's never clean. The staff: I don't think they get paid much. They all look, and act, like they want to be somewhere else. We had a problem one time, and the person at the counter wasn't interested in fixing the order, so one of the guys asked who could fix it. The woman behind the counter said only the owner could fix out order. My friend asked to speak to the owner, and the woman said "he's not here". My friend asked when he would be there and she replied "he never comes in", and rolled her eyes to the ceiling. Customer service score = "Customer Service? It's not my job. Go away. You bother me." So, bottom line: Take it for what it is: for the area it's inexpensive. Taste wise, even though it's bland, for the area it's still better than most. This area has a lot of really bad pizza. So why not go cheap at Big Pie. Hey - if you can't go really good - go really big. Take it for what it is. Don't expect anything more - and...
Read morePlace was not particularly busy. Went to counter to view menu, since no handout menus seemed to be available, guy behind counter said that if we wanted a whole pizza, it would probably be 1 hour wait! Because they had many call in orders they had to get done first! WHAT!?? (And he did not greet us that I remember). He said if we wanted pizza it would be better to order by the slice. Cashier said ordering sub sandwiches, salad would be quicker, 15-20 minutes. Ok, so three if us ordered subs(2meatballs, 1grilled chicken, 3salads). 5 of us ordered pizza slices. After about 25-30mins, 4 of our pizza slices came out and 3 salads. NO SUBS YET. We ate salads and those that ordered slices were eating. NO SUBS YET. After a few more minutes, one of us went to counter and asked about our subs. Same guy told us, there's a lot going on, a lot of call ins and take outs, etc. Our person said, "that's not our problem. We want our subs. He did not seem to concerned. Our person said, thats not our problem, we want ours subs. Well anyway, more time has passed now. Another of our people went up. Spoke to a manager. She was so apologetic. Gave us our money back plus no charge on subs.(That had YET TO BE MADE!) When subs came, meatball subs were DRY, little to NO SAUCE. Requested more sauce. When sauce brought to table, it was COLD. One of our group tools hers back to counter, told manager she did not want her sub. And left it at counter. By this time all if our group was finished except 3 of us. Other person ate her meatball sub(she said she was hungry). I ate my chicken sub, although it hardly had any chicken. It was dry, but I ate it anyway. 2 in our group said they had been there a couple of times before and had no issue. Food and service was great. Well, for me, I MIGHT try it one more time, but i probably will not suggest...
Read moreSo I had "high" hopes walking into Big Pie in the Sky. Mainly because my big-as-hell friend wouldn’t stop hyping it—and neither would my other friend who was with me. I was ready.
First things first, guys: the portions are insane. Literally. Seriously, a single slice is probably enough for your average Joe. Unless you're built like a whale, just came out of a Ramadan, or have something to prove, I’d say stick to just one slice or two. Anything more than that is just gluttony.
Now for the part some peeps might not like: the pizza itself? Kinda mid, not gonna lie. Yeah. Take that with a grain of salt. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't causing my clothes to fly off and move ecstatically. Just my opinion. The real issue was inconsistent toppings and thin crust.
The cheese pizza? Nope—where’s the cheese? Not enough. The all-meat pizza? On the complete opposite end—loaded with meat to the point it was salty and overwhelming, and it’s still a thin crust. Too much. The Hawaiian pizza? Actually the most balanced one of the bunch, but it still lacks the punch that makes you want to take another bite.
The service, though—points for that. The pizza came out fast. They might be sacrificing the quality of the pizza for quick service; IDK. Honestly, I’m only writing this as a way to cope because now I'm slightly terrified of my buddy who ate an entire pepperoni pizza alone. Like... that thing could’ve fed a family of five. I’m not even mad; I'm just in a state of shock because that would have taken me three days to finish. Damn.
Would I go again? Absolutely! The place is great for your family or group of friends. It's the experience that counts. So, yee, thanks...
