Great selection of pinball, but what I was really impressed by was the owner. It was obvious he has a real passion for what he does, and is super knowledgeable about his machines, but even more impressively, he has a passion for every person that walks in the door. Never have I felt so authentically welcomed by an owner.
He was always engaging and interacting with the folks in the arcade, and just seemed to have a genuine joy in sharing his passion with everyone. You can just tell the dude is a gem with a heart of gold.
This isn't a negative per se, but the only drawback was that there was loud metal music (which we don't consider child-appropriate and isn't our thing, but your mileage may vary) and imagery in the arcade that was not kid-friendly and scary to my 5-year old. He was covering his ears a lot, and he's also not accustomed to seeing skulls and crossbones, heavy metal posters with the typical imagery they contain, and most of the pinballs were horror themed or otherwise not child-appropriate (I steered him to Space Jam and couple other machines that were kid-friendly), so he had a tough time getting to sleep that night. Of course, I don't expect an arcade to cater to 5-year olds, but just a head's up to anyone thinking of bringing their family, this place is adult-oriented and not super family friendly.
I didn't catch his first name, but I loved meeting Mr. Joy and seeing the joy this place, and the people that come through the doors, brings him. It was just a very genuinely welcoming experience, and I really enjoyed meeting him and what he's created here. I hope this...
Read moreMy wife and I are quasi-vegan (she eats a plant-based diet for health reasons and I support my wife) and were about to starve to death in Keokuk until we found this plant on Google Maps. Joystix Rockade has a 5.0 star rating out of 102 reviews. Want to know why? Because this place is awesome! My wife and I walk in and the owner Pete Joy can tell instantly that we are the first-timers and made us feel so welcomed. Pete looks like a rock star from the 1980s that is trying to lay low in the Midwest. You will instantly like him. He has a magnificent personality. And the food?? Amazing pizza. The garlic cheese bread I am told comes from a local bakery and all of his ingredients are organic. He has a awesome collection of classic 80s arcade games that work! Tonight I played Centipede for the first time in 35 years and my wife handily stomped my arse. There are classic MTV videos playing from the era when MTV still showed music videos. I cannot recommend this place enough over any generic pizza place. It has real charisma. Also...Google Maps apparently was drinking bong water when they assigned street addresses. Joystix Rockade is across the street from its location on Maps. Tucked right inbetwixt Busy Bee and The Animal House. Give them...
Read moreThis place is amazing. Made a trip to Keokuk, IA for something different. Had a co-worker suggest a pizza joint, NOT THIS ONE, and was not impressed. We had to send it back because the pizza dough tasted un-cooked. Second time it was ok but not the best. I left the restaurant upset. The Airbnb we were staying at suggested Joystick. We walked down from the other business’s location to come to Joystick to play the games and make a better end to the night. Met the owner Pete Joy and we started to talk. He wasn’t happy that we had a bad experience at Another Pizza Joint, so he instantly said we had a pizza on the house. While the pizza was being made we played some games and talked to Pete. Pete has a true passion for Keokuk and the growth and health of the businesses around him. His passion is shown in the food. The pizza was SO GOOD and the time there was EVEN BETTER. I know for sure we...
