UPDATE:
As you can see from my first review, they have a consistency problem. The first time we went it was amazing. Two months later, it was a completely different experience. The heirloom tomato salad was completely inedible. The tomatoes were not ripe at all. Hard as a rock and the dish had zero flavor. And I mean zero. It was shocking for the price. My medium rare steak was completely raw in the center and I mean cold and raw. I would’ve sent it back to have it cooked more, but I was so turned off by it, and shocked by how different it was from from the first time. Not a good experience for the outrageous prices since inflation hit. When you’re charging $75 for a small fillet, it must be cooked to perfection. When you’re charging $22 for an appetizer, it must be perfect. Won’t be back.
My husband and I had our three year wedding anniversary here Saturday night, and it was one of the best dining experiences we’ve ever had. The location, the decor, the lighting, the attention to detail, the incredible food, the attentive yet not in your face service, stunning views of the ocean, comfort level…. you’d be hard-pressed to have an experience this perfect, even in Charleston
I had the filet mignon, cooked a perfect medium rare, and husband had the New York strip. I worked in a high-end steakhouse on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles for many years and never had a better steak than ours, until now. This was easily the best steak I’ve ever had.
The side of whipped potatoes are a perfect combination of creamy and buttery and you can’t go wrong with the local Mepkin Abbey mushrooms. Love a wedge salad, but wish this one had a little more bacon and that the dressing and iceberg were chilled. It was room temperature, but that’s literally my only gripe.
The rest of the meal and dessert more than compensated for it. For dessert, I had some sort of cappuccino take on a tiramisu that was in a mug made entirely of chocolate and filled with a whipped mascarpone and espresso. I can’t describe it really, but it was heaven.
We’re going back for my birthday and it can’t come soon enough. If you’re going to drop this kind of $, forget downtown Charleston. You can’t top...
Read moreWe dined here while staying at the resort. The restaurant itself is beautiful, and it's fun to dress up and have a "fine dining" experience. We felt, however, that there was too much focus on being just that - a fine dining experience - and not enough focus on the actual quality of the food served.
We started off strong with amazing cocktails: the espresso martini (which can be made decaf!) and the papillon sour (so good!). Then, we had the Kiawah oyster roast, which was a solid appetizer. The drinks and appetizer were the best part of the entire dinner.
Our entrees were, however, very disappointing. My husband ordered a New York strip cooked medium rare with a twice baked potato, and I ordered the lobster ravioli. We also received the chef's daily complimentary dish of fried zucchini with tomato sauce and (I believe) burrata. We're not sure if maybe the waiter misheard my husband's order, but his steak came out medium well, and there was nothing spectacular about the dish. The best part of his dinner was the twice baked potato. My lobster ravioli was overall disappointing. While I like an al dente pasta, the ravioli was too chewy. The lobster filling was too sweet, as was the sauce, which was light and citrusy. It really needed something savory to balance out the sweetness. The fried zucchini had a nice crunchy coating, but the inside was sticky, like it was overcooked. The sauce on the fried zucchini was okay but rather bland.
For dessert, my husband ordered the coconut cheesecake, which he enjoyed.
All in all, it was a very nice atmosphere and a fun experience, but when I am paying over $100 per person to eat somewhere, I want to be amazed by the food. I, unfortunately, was not amazed by the food here. I would grab a drink and an appetizer at the bar here any day but probably wouldn't have a full...
Read moreI recently dined at The Ocean Room and I must say that it was an incredibly disappointing experience. From the moment we walked in, it was clear that the service was lacking and the overall quality of the meal was far below expectations.
Firstly, our waiter was inattentive and unresponsive throughout the entire evening. We had to repeatedly ask for drink refills and were left waiting for extended periods of time before our orders were taken. It was frustrating to see the lack of attention and care from the staff.
To our dismay, the main course, specifically the steak, was burnt to a crisp. It was not only overcooked and tasteless but practically inedible. The charred exterior hindered any enjoyment of the meat, leaving a bitter aftertaste. It was evident that the kitchen staff completely disregarded any semblance of proper cooking technique.
Moreover, the sides that accompanied the steak were lackluster. The vegetables were undercooked and lacked seasoning, while the mashed potatoes were excessively creamy to the point of being unappealing. The overall lack of attention to detail in the preparation of these dishes was evident and disappointing.
Furthermore, the quality did not reflect the exorbitant prices. The Ocean Room markets itself as a high-end restaurant, but the overall experience felt more like a cheap diner. The lack of professionalism and care in both service and food preparation was simply unacceptable.
In conclusion, my visit to The Ocean Room was a complete letdown. The combination of burnt steak and horrible service left a lasting negative impression. I would strongly discourage anyone from wasting their time and money at this establishment. There are surely better options available for those seeking a quality...
