All the rave reviews and stellar write ups of this spot are all too subtle & under whelming compared to actually going there! This is a real-deal gem of a spot. The parking is a bit wonky and the dining area is tight & tiny, but all of that is well worth the pilgrimage to the top of the mountain for what you receive. What you receive (or actually what we received) was an amazing staff, wonderful people around you, and absolutely divine food from the cook team. I can not say how much I enjoyed this and am drooling thinking of returning. Based on the advice of my bank teller down the street (thanks, Tanya!) I went with the tuna sandwich and she-crab soup. Yes, it was a splurge. Yes, it was more of a lunch than I was intending. Yes, I would do it again every day of my life and enjoy the indulgence. The she-crab soup was SO rich and creamy with just tons of chunky crab meat in it. I'm in love with anything that has crab in it and this just made my day. I ordered the ahi tuna sandwich and probably gave the cook a disappointment. I do not like things lightly seared. I had it well cooked and they did exactly what I wanted which is rare. With the wasabi mayo it was just perfect. I didn't realize I had a side choice (plan ahead if you are reading this! read the side items before you have to order) and went with a great coleslaw. All in all - this is an awesome place. Just be patient if it gets crowded and be as warm hearted as your new friends/neighbors when...
Read moreI finally made my way to the Car Wash Cafe. I brought a friend and we got a table right away. Had we been 15 minutes later, we would be with the group of waiting standing patrons who end up hovering over folks who are trying to eat. Yes, it's a small place. The wait staff was very eager and friendly, but the place is bustling with activity so Space is tight and dear, especially after Church. This eatery is very popular with most age groups and economic backgrounds. It would do well to expand the size a bit. I had the Chicken salad sandwich which was fine, but I prefer it chunkier pieces with a bit more seasoning. The steak fries were the best part, though a bit salty, I'd order those uniquely prepared fries again! My friend had the Mexican egg dish but remarked he wanted some sausage in it, I reminded him it wasn't described that way. All and all it was fine . Many seemed to love the blueberry pancakes as I saw them on several tables. Then you don't pay at the table, you go up through the crowds and pay at the counter. I still have no idea about the parking and the car wash part?? Anyway, try it! I plan to return and learn more about other dishes, likely during the week, when getting in n out...
Read moreExcellent! Only one downside: it's too popular! But for us, it was a mere 10-minute wait to be seated on Father's Day for breakfast. My Huevos Rancheros was out of this world. The tostadas were perfectly fried and remained crispy amongst the fluffy eggs, wonderfully seasoned beans, and fresh toppings while I savored every bite. It looked like a work of art. I enjoyed it so much, I can't even remember what my husband ordered! But he left happy, and did not regret making the drive up from Gloucester for 'his' holiday breakfast, so it was a win-win. I did wish they had more space inside for seating, as it was very cramped. Despite this, the servers were friendly and attentive while pleasantly hustling around on that busy morning! One funny thing: if you have to wait for the restroom, there's a fountain in that vestibule; the sound of the water flowing from the fountain makes it really hard to stand there and wait! Maybe that fountain needs to be moved to... well, anywhere...
