, instead of writing a negative review on Yelp, or Facebook, I decided just to email about the experience that my mom and I had last night at your restaurant. First of all, we were really excited to be there as our girls night for Mother's Day. I don't get to go out a lot as a toddler mom and it was kind of a special night . Upon arrival the place was lovely the hostess was super accommodating even though we changed our minds about where to sit a couple of times, we were excited to have a couple of good bottles of wine and some food. I could tell our server was kind of busy ....out of the two males there he was the one with a beard I think his name was Brad. Since we are deciding on the bottle we wanted, I asked Brad for a couple of tastes to make sure that my mom would like what we were ordering. He acted like it was the most difficult request he had ever heard, rushed me ,and acted extremely put off that I had asked for tastes. I would have paid for them if it was something that included a charge.... I just wanted to make sure that my mom liked the bottle of wine. He was very rude about it. After we chose a $50 bottle of Pinot, the bottle was just kind of set on the table and poured without even an offer of a wine presentation. As a bartender of 10 + years at Westport Plaza, and a server at Truffles in Ladue, I know to at least offer a wine presentation. As the waiter was in mid pour of my whole glass, I asked my mom if she'd like to taste first. I'm not kidding you, he literally laughed under his breath and rolled his eyes. I was shocked at the blatant rudeness. Maybe we did not order the most expensive bottle of wine but is this not a wine bar? Even when you go to Applebee's they at least offer a wine presentation LOL. The food was great and everybody else delivering the food and checking on us was fantastic. like a The female servers that were running around with big smiles on their faces made the evening a little better. When we ordered our second bottle of wine, presentation was offered at that point but, like the foil was just left on top of the bottle .... super sloppy. That even isn't that big of a deal, but I guess after being laughed at and I was already offended, that kind of put me over the edge. So needless to say we probably won't be back there, I just thought I'd let you know how your server was acting towards people. Maybe it was just a one-time situation and he is having a bad night who knows? I just don't think it's acceptable.
update The proprietor of the wine bar contacted me after I sent him this email. He offered to reimburse me for the meal with a gift card which I was happy about .......to try the place one more time. Well that was about a month-and-a-half ago. Never responded, never followed through. Crickets....
Read moreHad some time to kill on a Monday in downtown Kirkwood waiting on a friend’s kiddo to finish lessons at School of Rock, so we stoped here for some tapas.
First, the space is very relaxed. It has the vibe of a wine lounge, without being stuffy. There’s a main bar to grab a cocktail, or booth seating and stand alone tables for parties large and small. Being just the two of us, it felt very much like date night! And the place was surprisingly busy for a cold January Monday night.
Our plan was to share several items and catch up. We started with the brussel sprouts and the bbq shrimp. The shrimp came five to the order with buttered toasted French bread. It sat in a cream sauce that we pretty much dipped everything in throughout dinner! The friendly waiter even brought some extra bread, which was a bonus.
The sprouts were cooked perfectly with a slight char. I thought they were just a tad bit oily, but my friend was in love with the dish!
We moved on to a cobb salad that was better than standard and an order of the seared tuna. The tuna came in a soy-based sauce and was topped with little pieces of avocado. The bites in the very center that were rare were the most delicious—mixed with some sesame rolled wasabi, perfection! One downside was the fish was overcooked at the ends. We let our server know as he checked in on us, just to make the kitchen aware and help them out. We didn’t expect him to discount the dish, but when he did—that was appreciated!
We ordered the dry rub wings for the youngster when he arrived, and he was kind enough to share with the table. And this turned out to be one of the favorite dishes of the night!
Wings at a wine bar— yes ma’am!!
We love shopping downtown Kirkwood and supporting the local restaurants. This place will he added to the short list...
Read moreMy husband and I came here on Halloween night for our fifth year anniversary dinner date. We were super excited but left disenchanted by the end of the night. From the start things felt a bit off when we entered when I was greeted by the host with a “kitchen is closing at 7:30pm tonight”. I appreciate the statement but as a customer it’s not very welcoming when you enter in and are following what the website and menu states that your kitchen closes a hour before restaurant close. It makes your customers feel rushed out the gate. We made reservations for 7pm. It’s just a bit odd to change up rules at random. When we placed our order the server was a bit sassy with us when I asked for a sauce on the side on two dinner items. I’m a diabetic so I try to monitor that as much as I can I felt like I was inconveniencing him and I shouldn’t feel that way. The food was alright but we did have some issues. My husband mentioned that the risotto was undercooked and lacking in flavor. Chicken sliders were good. My steak took a very long to come out. Once it did - the Mac and cheese was cold. I’m assuming they plated it before the steak and didn’t time it right. I asked for it to be taken off the bill. I didn’t feel like waiting any further or have it reheated. The server did offer us a free cake which was kind but really not needed. This place is pretty expensive so I assumed the food would be accurate. But it felt like a rush job from the service to the food. Just so they could shut the restaurant down earlier. We won’t...
