This is a must for breakfast or brunch. My son and I ate here while in town for the day. As soon as we walked it, it felt like we were in on a secret, as if we had entered a club by invitation only. We were greeted and seated right away. Being our first time, our server made some recommendations, including the "Sin-o-man" Roll, the pancakes, and the crepes. We took the recommendations but substituted the crepes for a slightly more robust omelet.
The cinnamon roll is surprisingly misnamed. If by sight only, I would say it looked sinful. When we split the pastry, though, and each had a few bites, both my son and I agreed it wasn't "sinful". With a name like that I expected an "ooey-gooey", cloyingly sweet concoction. It was nothing like that. The star of this show, is cinnamon. The roll itself was moist and each bite tasted of cinnamon, not because of a layered filling, but because the roll had actually absorbed all that flavor. The cream cheese icing wasn't so much an icing as it was a sauce. Somehow it wasn't overly sweet. We both would drag each bite through the "sauce" before eating. This is must try item without any fear that the sweetness will wreck the rest of the meal.
My son had the pancake with a side of bacon. This pancake is huge. It was nearly an inch thick while still fully on the inside. The pancake itself had a golden crust and enough flavor to be eaten all on its own. The syrup was an unnecessary but welcome addition. The bacon was crispy and had great flavor, but didn't outshine the pancake.
I had the "All In" omelet filled with bacon, sausage, ham, mushrooms, onions, tomato, and cheese. I expected something larger than what arrived. Whatever this omelet lacked in size absolutely made up for in flavor. The omelet was paired with their breakfast potato casserole. I didn't know what to expect with this side. It was thin-sliced, sometimes crispy, potatoes that looked like they were pilled high and cooked in a muffin tin. They didn't have a standard fried-potato taste; instead they were complex, herby, and delicious. I ordered a side of sausage gravy with my omelet and potatoes but found that it didn't add anything and actually took away from what had already been served.
This was a great stop. We'll be back another time when I can enjoy the many cocktails that were...
Read moreThe service was excellent and the overall decor and setup was pleasant and inviting. I really liked the look and feel of the place. The air-conditioning is set to a low temperature so dress accordingly.
My minor complaints are over the food. I know how this place is rated but I think it's exaggerated.
The grits were excellent and some of the best I've ever had. Please try these. The combination of flavors and textures was perfect. Just wish the portion was a little bigger since I inhaled it. It's rare to get a sunny side egg cooked that nicely too.
The cinnamon roll was a little dry, and not really any bigger than what you get standard at any other breakfast place. Just average sized really.
The pancakes were large and fluffy but cooked at to high a temperature, and had a crisp exterior. Not really anything special or that good really. We didn't get the "dressed up" version and those looked appealing at other tables.
The French toast was a nice big piece of bread, but was dipped so quickly that the dredge didn't penetrate the bread. It looked pretty, but was nothing more than bread with a thin egg coating. My kid barely ate much of it since it was really more like toast.
I didn't take a picture of it, but the deep fried deviled eggs were the biggest disappointment. The breading was perfect, the egg cooked right, but nothing was done to the yolks. No spices mixed in, or the mayo mustard tang, nothing done to the yolks at all. No paprika or any other addition to give it a distinction. It was just a deep fried egg, albeit done very well. I was really hoping for more. Might as well call it a dressed down scotch egg.
The price was a little higher than I expected, but overall not unexpected due to what we got and the reputation of the place. Maybe an off day in the kitchen? I personally think this is a fun place to go, and I love the atmosphere, but I'd go back to have a coffee and chat, or a bloody marry. Not a foodie...
Read moreThis is hands down the best breakfast place I've ever been to. The people are incredibly friendly and helpful. The decor is amazing. It has a log cabin type feel. It's also incredibly clean as well. I visited the bathroom before I left the establishment and they even have sanitizer for the toliet seats!! The food. Omg, the food. Amazing, marvelous, magnificent, superb. My boyfriend and I got the Sin-o-Man roll to start because it sounded good, and we could eat it while deciding what to order for our meal. We had just decided what to order when the cinnamon roll came out. "We had two small ones, so we put them together for you." OMG. Just one of these rolls would have been huge, but two???!? They were the size of my head. Almost literally. They brought it out on a dinner plate and it took up the entire plate. They brought out a steak knife to cut it up. We were blown away. So, instead of ordering a meal for each of us, we got one to split; the Bowman James. The waiter assured us that we had made a good decision. We didn't even finish the cinnamon roll before the mail meal arrived. IT CAME OUT ON 3 PLATES. One plate had just a pancake. But the pancake was as large as the dinner plate and uber thick. Best pancake I've had. Another plate had the eggs, ham, and bacon. The bacon is pecan smoked. And last, but not least, the third plate had biscuits and gravy, a fruit salsa, and a potato casserole. Did I mention what we got to drink? Boyfriend got the French press coffee and I got the in house freshly squeezed orange juice. Holey moley. All I'm saying is, if you like breakfast foods, go to Scrambled Jake's. They have plenty of other foods I didn't mention because I haven't tried them yet. I will be going...
