A local buzzing counter order Korean bbq restaurant. Umma’s offers a number of different meat dishes served over rice with a choice of home made banchan (side dishes). They are so proud of all of their items that they couldn’t even single one out to recommend, rather that any that I choose I would like.

Their dishes come in two sizes, “mini” and “regular”, although I think it would be more appropriate to call them “regular” and “large”, as the mini portion was already a full meal.

I ended up ordering the bulgogi (BBQ beef) plate, and it was delicious. The meat is well seasoned and well flavored and goes great with the rice. It is not overly sweet or salty, and you do get a generous serving. The meat is cooked to order, so it comes out steaming hot fresh to eat, at the cost of a small wait time to cook.

They have a number of side dishes, which they are also very proud of. Macaroni salad, bean sprouts, kimchi, seasoned tofu, chap chae (glass noodles), spicy cucumber, etc.

The restaurant also offers family packs with larger servings to go, and...

Umma’s K-BBQ is a fast casual Korean and Hawaiian influenced restaurant located at the corner of Trabuco Road and Bake Parkway in Lake Forest. The plaza is anchored by a McDonalds and Starbucks and there is plenty of parking available except during peak hours. Their menu is fairly extensive and even though you can dine in the outdoor courtyard, takeout is the way to go.

With a combination plate, you can enjoy 2 proteins with choice of base and 4 side orders. I opted for the kalbi and spicy chicken and they did not disappoint. I also tried the spicy pork but it was unfortunately on the dryer side. White rice was my base and I chose cabbage salad, spicy cucumber and a double order of chapjae glass noodles as my side dishes. I also sampled my wife’s kimchi and mac salad which were just as tasty as the other sides. The best parts of our experience were the generous portion sizes and the exceptional service provided by the young man behind the counter. We’ll...

Absolutely amazing K-BBQ. A+ 10/10! Great portions. I've eaten here over a dozen times and every time it is phenomenal. The Spicy Pork is my go-to, Chicken Katsu second, and Beef Bulgogi third. The Fish Jun and Meat Jun are also very good, very authentic. I have not tried the Kal-Bi but fellow reviews attest it is also amazing. Their selection of Banchan is on point. I love the Kimchi, Korean Broccoli, Spicy Cucumber, Seaweed Salad, and of course their Mac Salad! Getting Chicken Katsu with all Mac Salad is soooo good. This is a mom 'n pop family run business. Last time I was in one of the owners said they were a Korean family from Hawaii, so that's why this food is so amazing, it's Korean/Hawaiian fusion come to the Mainland. I love places that do this, you're getting a mixture of culture in your dishes. You can taste the love and care with the food here. Support local small businesses and get some Umma's K-BBQ! Order online for...

Have you heard of meat jun? If you’ve been to Hawaii, and you got a plate lunch, and that place where you got the plate lunch is Korean-owned, you’d know that meat jun is tender, thinly sliced beef dipped in egg and pan fried. Does it kinda look and taste like an omelet crossed with a milanesa? Yes. Is it like the softer cousin to katsu? Yes. Is it totally mind-boggling that it's not on the menus of every Hawaiian BBQ joint here on the mainland? Absolutely. It is, however, completely apropos that I found it at a mom-and-pop takeout joint in Lake Forest called Umma’s (which is Korean for “mom”), because meat jun is said to have been invented and popularized by a Korean mom-and-pop in Oahu in the 1970s. Umma’s has the spirit of all the Korean-owned plate lunch joints I’ve tried in Hawaii where meat jun has since proliferated. And for about $20 for the combo, you get your choice of two proteins to build your Mauna Kea pile of meat. Your first choice should, of course, be the meat jun. Your second choice could be galbi, BBQ chicken, spicy chicken, bulgogi, spicy pork, chicken katsu, or the fish version of the meat jun. Next, pick four sides from their panchan array. The mac salad is almost required. The spicy cucumbers are a must. Then you go home to find another person with whom to share all this food, because if you know anything about Korean-style Hawaiian plate lunches, it’s that it is designed to make new Hawaiian islands out of people who can finish it by themselves. #foodgasm #foodporn #instafood #foodphotography #foodblogger #meatjun #koreanfood #galbi #plateluch #kbbq #lakeforest #edwingoei #hawaiian #orangecounty #bulgogi #koreanbbq #hawaii
