Carmine Lonardo's Italian — Restaurant in Lakewood

Ok so I’ve ordered deli sandwiches and cookies or cakes here dozens of times over the years. And I’m stoked every time I come in, and walk away with a giddy little smile. Except for today. I’ve hyped this place up to my boyfriend for months and convinced him to try it with me before heading out on a road trip today. And I’m sad that today was the day I didn’t get what I ordered, and we were both disappointed. I wanted to order ahead to avoid the typical line that starts at noon on Saturday. Okay I get it, you don’t do call-ahead or on only two sandwiches. Fine. We came in around 1210 anyway, waited in line, and ordered two sandwiches - one 12” old school combo, wet, so we could eat it now. And another 12” Italian combo, dry, so we can eat it later. I asked for mild peppers on both and extra dressing/oil on the side. Purchased our sandwiches along with a couple bags of chips, a few cookies, and then waited for them to finish making our sandwiches. Once complete, he handed me two sandwiches and some oil and dressing on the side. I asked which was which. He didn’t know. Neither were labeled. And he already forgot. What? Oh, and he made both dry because he couldn’t remember which one I wanted wet. Okay, not ideal, but we’ll open one up and hope for a lucky guess. Opened one, it was the Italian combo. No peppers. Ugh. Okay now I’m upset. I head back in, and asked the cashier for mild peppers. I’ve rated them 5 stars in the past, but today deserves 2 stars. The 4 stars I’m giving is a very generous average. So I hope Carmine reads this because for $19 I just want the sandwich I ordered and that dopamine hit that comes with delicious food. Especially since I hyped up it so much. Amazing, Delicious, Remarkable, Memorable, Ridiculously Tasty! I'm not the first and won't be the last to share a positive review about Carmine's sandwiches! We've enjoyed his food for years! Our sons/his sons played hockey together and they've had their fair share of his food! His Italian sausage and pasta dishes are so memorable to them, it invokes good childhood memories with each bite! I'm sorry to say, I didn't include photos. Mainly because we anxiously devoured our food, before even thinking about taking pictures! That's when you know, it's authentically good!! When you just enjoy the food and not think about taking pics! Don't miss his famous Sausage/Provolone Sandwich, Dominicks Specialty sandwich or the Meatball sandwich. And don't leave without his Cannoli's! I also recommend that Peanut Butter Chocolate dessert. Lastly, there is no one nicer and generous than Carmine. He and his family and crew deserve all the accolades, awards, recognition given to them! Check out his "BEST Sandwich award from the nationally acclaimed magazine Food and Wine!" 100% agree!! Ok so I’m from New Jersey and I am visiting my son who tells me about this good Italian deli who makes an Italian HOAGIE that taste like home!! First I must say you walk into the store and it immediately took me to my little corner Italian deli with the smells and all the delicious food items!! Then comes the Hoagie of course we order the Carmine but you definitely need sharp provolone and the complete works on it to make it an authentic Italian Hoagie which I did!! The employee who created my Hoagie was very nice and provided excellent customer service! The beautiful sweet woman that was ringing at the register was exceptional!! She was extremely nice and kind and even gave us a sample cup of the house gravy!! She went above and beyond in giving us the utmost exceptional customer service! The Hoagie was delicious and was the closest to feeling like I was back home in Jersey!! In all the food that I’ve had on my visit this week the Carmine Hoagie was my absolute Favorite!!
