It saddens to have to give this rating to one of my favorite places. I’ve been going here for years since I was a kid. Our High School band even orders from here every end of school year for the band banquet. Today we brought my in laws here to experience what I thought would be an amazing experience. Unfortunately I was mistaken. First I will say the food was amazing, despite not getting what we wanted and missing items which we paid for.
Upon ordering, it was made clear that they were out of the items that we originally wanted. When we asked the woman to please repeat what items were available, she became very curt and brash and stated “what you didn’t hear me the first time!” Never mind the fact that I am deaf in one ear. We order what items they claimed they had “left”. Upon waiting for our order which we ended up waiting an hour an half for, we noticed many individuals receiving wrong orders. Once we finally had our name called for them to make it front of you, we noticed that they had the items which they claimed to be out of. At this point fine whatever, however we were missing one whole plate. As you know the food is expensive but good, so we wanted the food in which we paid for. So we informed them that one plate was missing and she raised her voice and said “he’ll make it right now for you is that okay, is it, is it okay!!” Once we got home we were still missing a side of Mac n cheese and all our corn breads. Don’t get me wrong the food was still good even if it wasn’t what we wanted/ordered. However it doesn’t change the fact that I have never been treated this way there before. I know they are always busy and that can lead to stress, but that was unacceptable.
I am quite appalled by the behaviors. I have catered some of my events along with our High schools events. I even have family who also performs there as well. I know that every establishment has a bad day, however this cannot be tolerated at all. I hope this review will be taken seriously and positive changes will come from this. I will give them one more chance this next week with my in-laws one more time to prove they are as amazing as I had hyped them up to be. If it is still the same, I unfortunately will have to look into a new establishment to cater mine and our High schools events and I really don’t...
Read moreTwo of my biggest regrets of this restaurant was that (1) I never took any pictures of the outstanding food (I was too hungry to care about taking pictures and since we live here, I'm sure we'll be back); and (2) I never visited this place sooner.
I've had the privilege of trying BBQ from all over the country and some overseas. I will say one thing, just because a BBQ restaurant isn't located in a state where it's famous for BBQ, doesn't mean it's awful. In fact, I will go on to say that John Mull's is by far better than ~92% of the BBQ restaurants I've had in my lifetime...and yes, this includes majority of the Southern states where it's supposed to be the capitol of BBQ. Keep in mind that a lot of Las Vegas residents have moved to this city from other cities/states, so this place is a melting pot of talented folks...this includes people from other places known for their BBQ. So if you're from Texas, Memphis, Carolinas, St Louis, etc., you need to stop thinking that you can only get good BBQ in your city/state.
My family and I ended up trying the pork ribs, brisket, pulled pork, hot links, collard greens, mac and cheese, baked beans, potato salad, and cole slaw. The food here is hands-down delicious - one of the best BBQ places I have ever experienced. In addition to the outstanding food quality, the staff working here are very friendly as well, which is always appreciative. Although I wasn't a fan of the long line waiting to go inside to place my order, it was well worth the wait, and great to see so many people supporting this business.
The price to quantity/quality ratio of this restaurant is spot on in my opinion, so no complaints here. If I were to place one, minor gripe about this restaurant, it would be the hours of operation. I wish this restaurant would stay open after 6 pm; perhaps until 8 pm? This is definitely not a show stopper but I do enjoy the flexibility to get some great BBQ during lunch AND dinner (yes, sometimes we eat dinner around 7-8 pm). Oh well, we'll just adjust our dinner schedule whenever we want some BBQ.
Highly recommend this restaurant to everyone. If you're visiting Las Vegas and staying close or on the strip area, you need to definitely take a ride share and...
Read moreThis is a very difficult review for me. I have lived all over the US, lived in Texas, lived in New Orleans, lived in Atlanta, lived in Alabama...so southern cooking, cajun cooking and bbq are real staples for me. This place did some great things (outside/feel), but missed the mark (brisket/sauce), so let me just be detailed on those facts for someone that needs the truth
Sauce Problem: Some people like that sticky sweet, smokey hot texas style while some like the Kansas tangy, sauce. Now, Texas often will cook on the sauce...but for ribs, dry rubs are everything to me...and a thinner dipping sauce is called for. That said though... I'm a definite Texas guy...I like sticky, sweet and spicy sauces. The sauce here is great consistency for dry rubs but very acidic...absolutely not balanced (maybe I got a bad batch?) and not having an opposing option was a real impact on my experience.
Cooking/Execution: This is where they shine...the prep, the execution, the flavors..its hard to do this on a large scale and this is where the experience shows at this place. Great sides, solid flavors, decent smoke rings, ribs couldve been better but were still solid, and a lot of prep work is clear here. The chicken was honestly the highlight for me...it was done exquisitely...flavors and seasoning beneath the skin, just throughout the chicken...it was very good.
Food disappointments and highlights: I got 3 meat combo...brisket, dark chicken and ribs. The brisket was the loser here. It was dry, it was thin like beef jerky and without a sauce I liked to pair...I didnt eat it. I will take it home and work it my way and make great sammiches though. This should be getting cut to serve, instead it was pre-cut, thin, cold almost and dried out...this cost them 2 stars from me.
Experience: overall, you dont feel like youre in Vegas, and as a local for 4yrs, I like that. I will still return, for sure...but I will bring my own bbq sauce. This shouldnt be necessary...they need an opposing sauce...this is COMMON in the southeast to do this. A place like this, needs more than one base sauce,...
