"The best chicken shawarma in Georgia."
That's what a friend in the restaurant business said to my wife and I when we asked him for food recommendations in Lawrenceville. Granted, I haven't eaten a lot of chicken shawarma in Georgia, but my wife and I LOVE this place. We don't live near Lawrenceville anymore, but if we are in the area, we always try to come by.
FOOD Our go-to is the chicken shawarma platter and Gyro with fries (under $15 and $10 respectively at the time I'm writing this). Both are delicious, and they go well together. We've taken our Korean immigrant mom, and she loved the fried tilapia (I believe). We also took our brother and sister-in-law visiting from NYC where there is amazing Halal food. They also gave their thumbs up.
LOCATION Flame Kabob is in a run-down building (?) that doubles as a Halal supermarket. Parking and seating are limited, but we've always been able to sit. (A lot of patrons get takeout) The interior is not super new/clean or fancy, so probably not a good first date destination. But I think it has character, and the food totally makes it worth it. I haven't used the restrooms here; I'm a bit hesitant to, though they could be perfectly fine.
SERVICE The first time we went, the owner(?) cooked for us and served us. Very friendly and from NYC, I believe. For our last few visits, a younger man (owner's son?) cooked for us and served us. He's very polite, and the food has been delicious every time.
In summation, Flame Kabob House is easily one of my favorite places to eat in Georgia. If I lived closer, I would go...
Read moreWe came here on our trip to Atlanta. Excited to try some Afghani kabob, the restaurant setting really disappointed us. Hole in the wall is an understatement, as it’s located along with a Halal meat and grocery. The atmosphere smelled like raw meat (butcher shop in the back), and the restaurant seating area was absolutely filthy. The tables and benches looked worn out, and the floor looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for days. Worst of all, roaches were crawling on the floor and bench. We had to move tables 3 times, as all of them had roaches on the floor where our feet would be, or the side of the bench.
We ordered the Lamb Chops and Mixed Kabobs. The Lamb Chops came in 4 pieces and were delicious. The Mixed Kabob had beef kofta, and 2 types of chicken (tikka and kofta). Why not have lamb tikka as part of the Mixed Kabobs entree? The beef kofta and chicken tikka were good, I didn’t really like chicken kofta. The green chutney was spicy.
Although the food was good, we would’ve enjoyed it more if we didn’t feel rushed and annoyed. We were constantly swatting uninvited guests (flies) off our food, and feeling paranoid about roaches crawling up our legs. The prices are expensive for the portion (half plate salad, less rice), served in styrofoam plates and plastic utensils. Sit in is definitely a no-go, but take out is also questionable...
Read moreWhat a great place for food and customer service! We visited late on a Saturday night right before closing and we were met with a smiling face and a warm welcome. There were so many options on the menu. We ordered a lot of different meals for take out. We were not rushed while we ordered. While we waited we sat at a table and shortly after all of our meals came out prepared and ready to go. The gentleman offered us to dine in and eat and assured us it wasn’t a problem (despite the time). We were happy to dine in because we couldn’t wait to try all the delicious foods. His service did not stop there, he offered us additional condiments etc. He checked on us often. The kids enjoyed their burgers and fries. My partner and I enjoyed our mixed platter, chicken gyro and chopped cheese. Everything was flavorful, fresh and hot. Oh and the pies and cakes! They are sooo good! We plan to be back soon as we tend to dine out on weekends but we still hadn’t found a place nearby we enjoy enough to frequent. Now that we’ve had Baba’s Wings and Platters, that will...
