We pulled up on Main Street, right across from the Boone County Courthouse and found quite a few open parking spaces right in front of the restaurant. The parking was free, which I was pleased about. On our way into the restaurant, we noticed that they had what looked like very pleasant outdoor seating.
The hostess asked us whether we wanted to eat inside or on the patio. Since the evening was drawing on and the temperature outside was marvelous, we asked to be seated outside.
Our server gave us a quick hello, but was very busy and it took quite a while for her to return. She apologized for the delay.
In looking over the menu, both my wife and I were drawn to the Chicken Portabella Fettuccine at $19. This was described as chicken and portabella mushrooms sauteed with bacon and garlic in a roasted red pepper cream sauce. We asked whether they could prepare the dish leaving out the bacon and our server said that they would be glad to accommodate us.
The fettuccine was cooked just right and there were plentiful chunks of chicken scattered throughout the dish. The mushrooms seemed to be a little harder to find, but we did find a few little diced pieces as we enjoyed our dinner. The chicken was tender and moist and did a good job of absorbing the cream sauce.
Overall, the dish was delicious, though I ended up with a reasonable quantity of excess sauce after eating. It was a little difficult to consume the sauce using the fork and knife provided. It would have been even better if they had supplied some type of bread that we could have used for dipping the last savory bits of the cream sauce at the end of the meal. However, no bread was provided.
My wife ordered the Busted Knuckle beer from Quaff ON! Brewing Company which was a porter that they had on draft. She said that the beer tasted very good.
The outdoor patio area was between the restaurant and the next building in what was probably a former alley. They had nice lights stretched festively between poles that had been installed and a number of tables, some with umbrellas. Fortunately, the buildings on either side were quite tall, and it was late enough in the evening that we didn't need to worry about too much sun. The view of the courthouse from the patio was magnificent and it made one think they were in a European capital instead of Indiana corn country.
Near our table was a larger party of at least 10 who were quite distracting and loud. Once they finally departed, the area was much more peaceful. I highly recommend sitting on the patio.
Overall, I felt that Kinnard & Drake’s 1830 Chophouse was worth the trip. We had considered the steak, but it seemed a little pricier than what we were wanting to spend that evening, but if it's anywhere as good as their pasta, I’m sure it’s...
Read moreOrdered take out from 1830 chophouse last night, got two large Greek salads with steak and chicken toppings. The steak medallion they gave us was 4 small slices of steak for $14, and then the salad was literally two bowls of lettuce with one tomato slice and a crumble of feta in each. We called to ask why our Greek salads didn’t have any olives in it, the manager said that we didn’t have anything in the salad because we asked for the dressing on the side. That didn’t make any sense to me, so the manager said he would have the chef remake the salads and we accepted. The manager called back 5 minutes later and said that the waitress that took our order said this was a common occurrence for us, so I guess they were saying everything was our fault. So the manager said that “we cannot please you with our service so there is nothing we can do that will please you.” I was confused about the waitress, who I thought liked us, saying we have had problems with the take out before and it was a common occurrence with us. I called to speak with the waitress and asked for her by name. The manager then takes the call and says that I was harassing his staff, because I guess it’s harassment to ask for someone by name. He said if I called again he would phone the police. I have never been treated this way by a restaurant, I love going out to eat and it makes me very sad that the only steakhouse in Lebanon treated customers this way. I will never feel comfortable going back in there and eating.
Definition of harassment- aggressive pressure or intimidation. I was very kind throughout the whole process and the manager made me feel like I was a bad person. Very inexcusable way to treat people. Also the occurrence he spoke of was one other time we ordered takeout and they failed to give us an item we ordered so we had to go back and get it. My Mom spoke with the manager and asked if he would please refund the two salads and he refused. This control that this man had over our hard earned money was so outrageous and unacceptable he should not be in the hospitality industry. To not refund a customer for just giving them two bowls of lettuce is wrong rude and absolutely absurd. He also said if I refunded everyone that called in with a problem with their order we would have no business well that says a lot. It is no longer about the money but the ethics and standards being held by this business/manager. My son wanted to ask the waitress that we had talked to several times why she said that we had several occurrences. Why is this harassment? He had just been in there waiting on the order and she was talking about her children like they were old friends. He even tipped her well for a to go order. I am so embarrassed for the chophouse the manager and the way we...
Read moreWe ate here a year or two ago and it was a 5-star experience. So when we celebrated birthdays for my brother and sister-in-law last night, we were very disappointed. We arrived at our reservation time of 6PM. The restaurant was nearly empty. But over the next 30 minutes, the restaurant nearly overflowed with people and nearly every table inside, and some outside, were filled. There were only 3 waiters and they were overwhelmed. Our waiter later told us that management had recently fired 2 servers. If true, management should have assumed control of reservations or controlled seating customers. A drink was brought to our table that nobody had ordered; the charge for it was on our bill but was taken off when I pointed it out. Our appetizers appeared after our main course had arrived. They forgot my salad which was ordered as part of a special 3-course meal; they brought a different salad from the menu and a separate charge for it appeared on our bill; it was also removed after I showed it to our waiter. The glass of rose wine my sister-in-law ordered was so dry she found it to be unpleasant. We had to remind our waiter to bring rolls; they also arrived after the main course had been served. My mahi mahi was barely warm, but I didn't have the heart to tell the waiter. Ultimately this wasn't the fault of the waitstaff. It would have been better to turn customers away rather than serve a substandard experience. Upon our exit from the restaurant, my brother suggested that next time we'll meet at Arni's nearby; we also have liked two Thai restaurants west of Zionsville, a bit further down the road. We won't return to the 1830 Chophouse. And after reading the response to my review, I can say that nobody from management came to our table. It is very much the fault of poor management that this occurred. And unfortunately it's far more difficult to correct bad management than fire waitstaff or hire a new chef. Read management's response as a "screw you" after we spent over $225 dollars at his establishment. No sincere...
