Summary : The food quality is amazing and commendable, and the staff is friendly; however, the bar service falls short. Incorrect drink orders, unbalanced cocktails, and refusal to remake poorly prepared drinks significantly impact the overall experience. For a group of six, I spent $130. Despite the enjoyable food, the disappointing bar experience based on a couple of visits leads to a final rating of 3.9 out of 5.
Explanation: The Backyard Leeds is a great place to bring your family to dine, whether you’re with a group or on your own. It’s especially nice before catching a movie, like I did when I came to see Beetlejuice and The Joker at the Grand River Drive-In Movie Theatre. The food is definitely on point. Both times I’ve dined here, I’ve left eager to return and try more of their diverse menu options. You can’t go wrong with their pizzas, Buffalo wings, cheesy garlic bread, Greek salad, combo plate, Cuban sandwich, or BBQ fries.
The floor service is excellent—they keep everything clean and bring the food to you. The staff is courteous and friendly, always ready to answer any questions. With such great service, it’s hard not to leave a tip.
However, my experience at the bar was not as positive. During my first visit, I asked for a draft lager beer pitcher but was given an IPA instead, which put me off ordering a second round. On my second visit, I requested two whiskey sours, but my family member and I could only taste lime juice and ice—the whiskey and syrup were nonexistent. When I kindly asked the bartender to remake the drink, they refused, saying they could only offer two shots of whiskey for an extra charge, as the 9 oz cocktails had just 1 oz of whiskey. It was then that I realized my cocktail was mostly filled with concentrated lime juice. This was disappointing, as the ingredients for a whiskey sour should be measured and added in equal proportions to create a balanced cocktail, but it was instead overwhelmed by lime juice. Especially the extra charge for the additional whiskey which it was not called for. This experience soured my mood and willingness to order another round, leaving a poor impression due to her response and service.
In conclusion, I’ve learned to tip cautiously at the bar—if at all, meaning not tipping the first time when purchasing a drink. To play it safe, it’s probably best to just order a can or bottle of beer. For a party of six, I spent $139, not including the cocktail drinks and tips. I could have spent more if the drinks had been on point and the bar service had been better. Overall, I would have given this place five stars, but based on my bar experience, I give it a...
Read moreRead moreI’m really disappointed with how The Backyard has seemed to go downhill. The atmosphere is still great for families, but the food and service has declined greatly. During our most recent visit, we stood at the order counter for 5 mins waiting for someone to greet us. Not a big deal because we can be patient, but 2 staff members (1 in the kitchen and one standing at the counter of what looked like to-go food?) looked at us yet didn’t acknowledge us at all which was odd. I was in food service for 10+ years and a “someone will be right there” goes a long way, but it’s not that deep. I wouldn’t complain about just that. When the person who takes orders finally arrived, she acted completely irritated that we were there. She took our order but forgot to give us our drink cups, so I asked for them and she gave me a discernible annoyed look. I moved on just assuming we all have our days. You never know what’s going on in someone’s world. When our food arrived, one item was luke warm at best and the onion rings were pretty burnt. I tried them because I’m not going to send something back unless it isn’t edible, but they tasted of burnt cooking grease. I mentioned it to the very nice food runner, who honestly was the only redeeming factor in this experience, and they said they completely understood and noticed, but the kitchen gets annoyed if the staff asks them to remake food before they send it out. Verbatim. They brought new ones out, but they were the exact same. Burnt and tasted like they had been cooked in grease that hadn’t been changed in at least a day, if not more. Maybe it was an off day, but idk that I’ll come back. $40 is a lot to spend on meh food and I question what’s going on in the back if they’re ok sending out poor quality food. All in all, the collective experience just...
This collection of restaurants has SO much potential but it is being wasted by poor service. I was so excited to be able to get my favorite bbq from Saw’s, but they are giving Saw’s a bad name here. My order was taken and then she had to get permission to give me a discount from this coupon I found. The server got distracted talking about I think the football game that was on and then came back to complete my order and let me pay. I asked how long the food would take and she needed me to remind her what I had just ordered, then she assured me it would be only 10 minutes. We waited 35 minutes for our food and it was given to us “for here” when I told her we were here for a drive-in movie so we needed it “to-go”. Once we got back to the car, we realized a whole entree was missing. So we called and got a refund for that because we didn’t want to deal with them anymore. The food we did receive was delicious, but we will not be coming back due to the disorganization and confusion of this place that cost us the first 15 minutes of our...
