I only chose the restaurant based on the reviews I read, and believe me that will not happen again. Who ever said this was "as real as Mexican food can get" has obviously never tasted real Mexican food. Having grown up in South Texas I have an idea of what authentic Mexican food tastes like. This wasn't even close. I should have been suspicious when my wife and I were told they were out of beef. My wife ordered the two soft taco meal and I opted for the special of the day which was a taco, enchilada and burrito. My second suspicion should have come when I was asked if I wanted hard or soft "shell" for my taco. Not tortilla, but shell. When our order arrived right off the bat I figured something was wrong when my wives "two soft tacos" were what amounted to be a burrito cut in half. I questioned this and was told it held the same ingredients as two soft shell tacos. My taco contained chicken, since they were out of beef, lettuce, tomato and something that tasted very much like cheese whiz. As a matter of fact all the items contained this cheese whiz like substance. The burrito was a soggy mess of dry chicken and cheese whiz and the enchilada was wrapped in a pancake like tortilla. My "hot sauce" tasted very much like tomato soup with chili powder added and my wife who chose the "mild" tasted like tomato soup sans the chili powder. Now I'm a big man at 6'4" and a little over 300 lbs and rarely leave a plate with food still on it but this day I ate less that 10% of the meal. We left very disappointed and a little upset that we paid $25 for something that I wouldn't feed a goat. Avoid...
Read moreI wanted to give this place a fair shake after reading the reviews. You can't always tell when it comes to mixed reviews, so figured it was worth a shot. I had been craving mexican food. I got a veggie burrito. Sadly I wasn't able to eat any of it after the first two bites.
The cheese tasted stale and chemically processed. It had the consistency of scrambled eggs. The salsa smelt and tasted like spaghetti sauce. The rice tasted weird. The refried beans were funky. All in all, it was a bust. The green peppers and black olives were good though.
I'm hoping it was just an off day for the cook, but I don't think I'll be back to find...
Read moreIt reminds me of going to a Cantina in Mexico but cleaner. Granted it is an old building and the inside is basic, it is not dirty by a longshot as some reviews suggest. The food itself - relatively simple but still tasty. I was surprised that they had a sauce as hot as I like it, being in a gringo/frog city after all. Mexican food is simple and inexpensive to make, but they did step it up a little bit. Best Mexican fare - not by a longshot, but still a good place to stop when in the area to get your enchilada fix. Still looking for a Pollo Fundido plate in Maine and this is probably the type place that would do...
