Charger House Restaurant — Restaurant in Ligonier

I'm not from around these here parts, so maybe my taste buds don't work well for Indiana dining. This place is highly rated by locals, but I left hungry and disappointed. Their idea of a dinner salad is iceberg lettuce, shredded cheese, and finely chopped boiled eggs layered over the top. Not much actually from the garden, I'm afraid. And, don't ask for blue cheese dressing; they don't have it. We ordered the fish special which came with what, to my palette, was an oddly spiced coleslaw, which I ate half of before I began to wonder about its "secret" ingredients, what they might be, and what they might do to me. The fried fish was lightly breaded and heavily salted. They provide a huge pitcher of Tartar sauce, which, inexplicably, was extraordinarily sweet. I found it disturbing. Most amazing food everything was so fresh, you could tell by the texture and flavor of everything from the waffle fries to the fish to the coleslaw that it was all freshly made that day and never frozen. They are worth the money. Also not a long wait time at all from order to service was about 5 minutes,but they also weren't that busy at the time we went as it was almost closing time. I strongly recommend the fish dinner it was worth it with 5 big pieces of fish and a heaping serving of waffle fries. The coleslaw wasn't a small helping either and was crunchy and had amazing flavor. The tarter sauce was sweet and tangy but a little overpowering on the Sweet end. Honestly though the fish did not need tartar sauce. They also provide Frank's Red Hot at the table but again it didn't need any help as the flavor of the fish was on point. We had a reservation for 12 of us. The table was ready. The waitress was organized, friendly and patient. Most got the cod fish dinner or basket. I had the chicken strips and onion rings. Both were HOT and good. Chicken strips are often OVER DONE at most restaurants. These were only SLIGHTLY over done. The onion rings were hand dipped or a super frozen. The kitchen staff is well oiled machine. Almost all of us got our food at the same time and they were all hot. Kudos to the kitchen. I said "almost" because ONE of us was missed, but corrected immediately. The atmosphere lost a star because the decorating was an Elvis afterthought.
