Guppy's — Restaurant in Longboat Key

Well I’m giving Guppy’s 5 stars because the food is excellent and just what LBK needs. However we had very poor service and really negative interaction with the obvious Philly owner and his temper. We arrived at 6pm and we sat at a table. We were approached by a brand new server who claimed that she had not received any training. She asked for drink orders, my wife order a special margarita and I asked about the beer list which is not printed. She said she didn’t know and she would return with it but unfortunately she never did. Another lady clearly more experienced server approached us at 6:30 to take our order for both food and drinks. At 7:15 we started asking where was our food. We asked 2 servers and each said it was coming out soon. At 7:30 the owner stopped by and we again now very frustrated asked about our meal. We explained we were waiting an hour for our food? At which point he claimed he checked on our ticket and it was only 24 minutes? Regardless of what the ticket said it was an hour. He then said asked what do you want me to do? And one of guests said “ nothing bring out f-ing food. At this point the owner went ballistic and invited us to leave saying no one should speak to him this way. We stayed but he was clearly pissed off. The food was great but expect service issues as they work the bugs out. I’m an experienced restaurateur with 2 locations and what I’m explaining is totally accurate, I know about customers exaggerating wait times but this was the facts, 2 of the couples who were with us will never come back but of course I will. I understand opening restaurants and the bumps that need to be worked out. I only wish the negative confrontation could have been avoided on both sides. This was the second time I have eaten here. My first experience was good.The food (cheese steak) came out hot and within a reasonable amount of time. My second visit was a completely different experience. First, the service was good. Our waitress greeted us, got us water and took our drink order soon after we were seated. She came back and took our meal order within a reasonable amount of time. I started to notice other dinners around us looked as though they had been waiting a long time for their meals. We over heard a lot of apologies from manager/owners for the delay of their meals. Our meals finally came and my order wasn't hot or even a little warm, but at most it was room temperature. I did eat my meal, but there was little to no seasoning in the tacos, beans or rice. My husband's salad was missing the avocados. I'm really disappointed. We’re always on the lookout for a great spot everyone can enjoy during family vacation. Found Guppy’s and couldn’t have been more impressed. Great spot to grab a happy hour cocktail and app while watching the game, or bring the family for dinner. Staff is super welcoming, food was excellent, and the place was clean! The wings were crisp and offered a variety of sauces, but didn’t even need to be sauced. The authentic Philly cheesesteak sub was legit!! Even the bread was from Philly and I got mine slathered with Cheese Whiz! Doug and Kelly took great care of us during our visits. Can’t say enough good about having a spot like this on Longboat! It’s always great when you don’t actually have to leave the key to find somewhere everyone can enjoy. Looking forward...
