The good: Happy Hour! Draft beers and wine for $4, specialty drinks served with amuse-bouche. Very personable and friendly bartender, cozy atmosphere away from the bustle of downtown. The bad: The chef is attempting to punch above his weight class. Both experiences here have shown poor execution of the menu item. This most recent visit the carne pizza and steak frites were tried. The "flatbread" that underpinned the pizza was thinner than a cracker, tasteless. It was crispy/overdone where there was no topping, and soggy where there was. I was looking forward to the meat combo, but the taste was overwhelmingly salty. As in, drink half a glass of water between each bite salty. Salt cured meats, gorgonzola and I could see more salt on top of the crust. The steak frites; the frites were soggy, also close to over-seasoned, the steak itself, way over salted like the pizza. Portion size for this entree was also disappointing at the price point. Three small steak medallions (~3oz) and fries for $14. Edit: Unfortunately, bring this up with the server would have been a moot point, as she kindly informed us that we needed to GTFO by a certain time because of reservations later in the evening. Given how long it took to get the food out in the first place, there was no time to take up a grievance with the food. If you're trying to be Pearl Street fancy with prices to match, execution is critical, and both of my visits here have failed to live up to any standard. I would only recommend this location for HH drinks, avoid the food menu.

I worked in food service for 20 years. This is NOT IT. Flabbergasted that the owner responds to terrible service with rude and childish response. My husband and I waited for 20 minutes in the heat and had reservations. Our server brought drinks (eventually) and never came back. My glass rim was literally broken. No one offered to turn on fans, or to take a food order after drinks were served. We even mentioned that it was our first time in and we’re stoked to be there. That is exactly what happened. We had to go inside to find her, and then we’re continued to be ignored inside, while our server chatted up another table right beside us. I stand by my review. “Karen” moment?? Hardly. At this price point, I would expect more. We ended up at saloon 99, and had an amazing experience. Also, I noticed you didn’t mention “reviewing camera footage” because it would reveal that our experience was exactly as described. I think you might be the Karen here. Also, you said “I apologize that that was your experience, how can we do better?” wrong. I implore others to cruise through the poor review owner responses. He needs new material. In the words of Pineapple Express Danny McBride “don’t.”

We made a wrong location reservation, but this is the location which we had been wanting to check out. The hostess was very accommodating to make sure we have our dinner at 8.30 even tho not knowing they close at 9p. The food there totally amazed us.. my husband had the Steak and Frite which came out perfect.. and my Duck Duck Cous Cous.. oh that was so good on the melting pieces of breast albeit when it comes to the leg a little on the salty side on the skin.. the cous cous goes so well with the pistachio cream the way I like to combine. The Brussel Sprout appetizer.. excellent.. as well as the Caesar salad.. only slight let down was the anchovies.. they should have it slightly baked or fried then tear and sprinkle on the salad. The vinegratted oil and cheese they used Grana Padano are such excellent choice!! They did not rush us and let us enjoy our dinner.. the server Kerry was very friendly and helpful. Will definitely come back again.. Thank you for the excellent services. Happy Boxing Day!

Overall a good first experience! I did only give four stars though, for a few different reasons. This is for constructive criticism purposes only, not to deter other visitors. For sure give this place a try! I will likely be visiting again in the future, just hope to have better service in the future.

When I first found out about West Side Tavern, I looked on their website and on google to try to make a reservation, but didn't see anywhere to do so. So, I figured it was a walk-in type of place. My boyfriend and I went on a Saturday, and once we arrived we got a pretty dismissive response that we need reservations and should have called. I would recommend putting this on your website so that people who don't frequent WST will know! I'm sure regulars would know this, but we didn't realize.

No biggie, we called and made reservations for the day before Valentine's Day, but not before getting sternly told they were no longer taking reservations for Valentine's Day. I don't expect a cheerleader or anything on the phone, but two interactions in a row with a "why would you even think you can come without a reservation" or "why would you even think you can get a reservation on valentine's day" kind of vibe just put me off a little.

We loved the ambience here once we arrived! Super cute, cozy, good lighting. 10/10. The cocktails were so wonderful, I got the "You're turning violet, Violette" (or a name similar), and it was one of my favorite cocktails I've had! Our brussels sprouts were unique, and my boyfriend's Salmon was so great (and I don't even eat fish, so that says a lot). My steak was a little lackluster, however. It was cooked well, but not much of any seasoning, and the shoestring fries I would more consider chips. Just left a little to be desired!

Our waitress was sweet, but not very attentive. I believe she checked on us once, but once we got our bill it took a very long time for it to be picked up. Overall we spent over two hours there, but not because we were eating or drinking slowly. Everything just took a long time, including the service. We weren't in a rush, but no one likes to wait a long time to pay once you're ready to go home. I would say that it's because Valentine's weekend is busy, but the table behind us was empty for an hour, so I don't know if I would attribute it to that.

Cocktails and ambience are the real seller here! I would probably not order the steak again, but look forward to trying some other dishes like the chicken florentine. I would also love to feel more welcome/have more attentive service, in the future! It's a great place, and better service would for sure put the tavern in a...

My husband and I had a horrible experience here a while ago. We tried to talk to a manager or the owner while there, but no one would talk to us. We had previously had great service and were very surprised and disappointed. We decided we’d never go back. Monday night while at dinner with a friend she convinced me to try it again on the way home after dinner. We had previously brought her here and she enjoyed it. I decided why not give it another chance. We sat at the bar and noticed some changes in the decor and asked if they had remodeled. The bar tender seamed very annoyed and said no! Another customer at the bar corrected her and her reply was “well a long time ago!” She then argued with the customer about how long ago it was. I don’t know why this would upset her. A little later she asked my friend and I to move to get to the cellar and I said “no problem I’ve done this before I don’t mind”. She then said to me “oh your such a regular! “. I really was just trying to let her know that we didn’t mind getting up and moving. I wasn’t trying to impress her with being a regular. I really don’t understand the snarky attitude. Later another customer mentioned her arm and asked how it was. I saw the bandage and asked if she had strained it. She angrily lifted her arm and told me “no I fell into a fire!” I’m really sorry if I offended her. She seamed to have a problem with me and my friend and I don’t know why. When we asked for desert and a couple more drinks, she asked who’s driving and said she wouldn’t serve my friend because she was driving. We were totally ok with that. I decided to have another though and she said she wouldn’t serve me because she was worried about how I would feel in the morning. I’ve never heard of such a thing. We hadn’t had alcohol before we came in and we’re not in any way too drunk. We really had a great time talking to the other customers around us and it’s a shame we had to leave feeling very insulted by the bartender. I assure you this is not a weapon as I’ve seen you accuse others of with poor reviews. I really feel you should want to know our experience.

Review edit: your reply has nothing do with the rudeness of the bartender before we even had a drink, and I was not driving. You like to use your camera for an excuse for all your bad reviews. How can someone defend against that. Can we see that? Like I said we were fine with her not serving my friend. There were people there longer than us having more. This is an easy excuse for you to use for rude service. And I have insomnia by the way and like you’re very rudely insinuating was not drinking at 3am when leaving...

Went here for what I hoped would be a great date night and unfortunately had a very bad experience with our server Kayla.

It started with a cup for the sangria we ordered was provided to us chipped - not a big issue - we asked for a new cup and it took to the point (about 10 mins later) where we started to stopwatch to see how long it would take for her to come back. eventually we asked the hostess for a new cup and received it within about 30 seconds and probably about five minutes after that our server finally returned with a cup.

In and of itself it’s one mistake, still it’s not a big issue. But then our appetizer didn’t arrive until after the meal. it then came out wrong. We asked for it to go back and come out again and it came out a second time. wrong.

at the end of the meal I was charged for the mistake appetizer that I did not order. An extra $14 that essentially was added to our bill for something that was not provided glad I noticed it.

When I mentioned this to our server Kayla she claimed that she had given me the check for the wrong table (which was a blatant lie because all of the other items were what we what we ordered) Again if it was an error ringing up that’s fine but lying directly to a customer who clearly can tell the difference is I think not appropriate for a server.

I will say the food was quite good (minus a steak that was ordered medium rare and was overdone) but the service from server Kayla was very very bad to the point that I said the stopwatch on my phone several times and I’m taking the time to write this review in the first place I intended to talk to the manager after our meal but unfortunately did not get the opportunity to leaving this review so others are aware of my experience I hope you guys have a better experience than I do.

TLDR: server was extremely careless and made at least five mistakes throughout the course of our dining experience I will not be back anytime soon based on this experience...
