Not much luck at this neighborhood staple despite the other great reviews. The line moved at a very slow pace, despite having a full staff. I was rejuvenated with excitement for their food after seeing their menu, but don't be fooled. Their cafe de olla was weak and, dare I say, watered-down. There was no substance to it. Their tamales lacked salt and flavor- it was bland and watery which made no sense to me whatsoever. Make the trip further east to ELA for consistently better and much more abundant tamales shops. I also ordered a quesedilla pan, which had an uneven distribution of cheese. It was too spongy and didn't have the dense texture it should have; overall, the flavor was fine, but go to a Salvadorian place to meet your needs. The only stand out was the jalapeño and cheese stuffed bollilo! My, oh my, was it tasty and they didn't skimp out on the cheese! Overall, they may be an institution in the area, but they lack inspiration and consistency in their options for the price. I won't be back.

Baybeeee!!! When I tell you!!! The veggie tamales are what I live for at this bakery!!! Not once have they ever been dry or lacking. Good size and very juicy. Wrapped in corn husk. I'm from Chicago, so I love a wet tamale. If you prefer it to be dry, then call ahead and see if they can accommodate, but I promise if you enjoy it the way they make it, you'll love it too! Not too salty. Great flavor and very filling. I normally buy 6 and freeze a few to have a healthy meal for lunch or snack. You will not be unhappy with the veggies tamales. They also have good sweet breads and I'm trying the choco-flan (will report back on that later). I always call ahead and do takeout.

I heard through a friend that they were cash only. After parking I checked their website and couldn't find anything about cash only, and I called a couple of times but it went into voicemail. I ordered (and paid) on-line from the car as i was parked around the corner. I went inside just a couple minutes later, 3 workers, 4 customers in line. My bag of tamales were already ready for me to pick up! I was in and out in less than couple minutes! I ordered 6 red chili pork, 6 red chili beef, 6 green chili cheese. All tamales were tender, soft and delicious. Will definitely go back.

Jan. 1,2016 I am a true "Angelino" Latino male who considered himself not only a superb culinary creator but one with an outstanding culinary appetite as well , and at 50 ( young looking 35) still maintaining a 30" waist.. Thank you !! I cannot write enough about this gem and the beautiful delights it has to offer ! Every Latino has there die hard favorite place , yeah yeah, but how many are willing to travel 30-40 miles weekly or bi- weekly to get there? I have lived in west Hollywood , old town Pasadena, Beverly Hills , ect , this non homogenized Latino knows his roots and still make the mile long drive to "La Mascota"! True story ; while visiting family in the very scary "white" Orange County ( shivering even to write of it), I made the 50-60 mile drive just to satisfy our Latino palettes for the delicious & always fresh "pan dulce"! Cry I may when the doors close for good if ever because made here are the not so easy, rare delicacies I remember as a child when dad would bring home that large white bag with spots of delicious mouth watering drops of heavenly greese peaking through . No one makes them any longer for that was of another era ( 1960's) and no one makes little boys like myself for that matter as well , but God himself left a touch of his sprit in that batch of flour and sugar .. and though dad is gone I am the one to still carry that tradition of "Gabe, uncle Gabe, mijo , cousin Gabe can you get a dozen "Libros"! Yes libros and the way they were made as I recall back in 1967 are still made here so beautiful and so delicate . An oblong lightly sugar coated topping in what I can only describe as layers upon layers of philo dough with a very light brushing of strawberry in the middle , my God my hands tremble as I near the glass that proudly displays these beauties . Only 10 min on the highway of my chick BMW , the rememnits are a dead give away as my lap, car seat , counsel steering wheel are covered in flakes of sugar and philo dough ..And with a smile on my face , I could give a damn .. In all honesty this place touches my heart , for what other American institution can refer to its patrons as they enter the doors with "Hi mijo" I am more than proud to be a Latino , and more than willing to write a review in any given day gladly about the wonderful sweet place that brings me home every single time ... "La Mascota".. You have this boys heart ..God bless you and allow to serve us for many more years to...

I give La Mascota Bakery 10 Stars 🌟 but here they only have 5 Stars 🌟 here, I have gone to La Mascota Bakery for many , many years I am from the area but due to a terrible motorcycle accident I had to relocate to the Imperial Valley about 200 miles away from my country E. L. A but time and again I find myself back in the Barrio eating my favorite food at my favorite spots 😎 I remember the former owners Michelle and family they were always good to me. I was at the La Masocta Bakery on Saturday January the 12th and our food was cold I mentioned it to Frank the new owner and he was great and quick to resolve this for us and he even offered to give us fresh food and offered to give me my money back but I am a man of honor and intregrity and I refused to take my money back I mentioned Ed to Frank I didn't want money back I just wanted to eat the delicious food that they are famous for. thanks a million Frank my family and I thank...
