Breakfast Poutine / fries, scrambled eggs, brown gravy, sausage, cheese, salsa - 5🌟! Sweet Potato Pecan Pie - 5🌟!
I was in Highland Park looking around the shops for some gifts and thought it would be fun to randomly pick a spot to eat lunch. Wavy Gravy Cafe wasn't on my radar but it sounded fun and interesting so I stopped in. What a lovely place it turned out to be.
I am from Western Canada and Canada has very few dishes that we call our own. Poutine (more of a Quebec/Eastern Canada creation) is our one claim to fame and Wavy Gravy's menu features a delightful and delicious selection of poutine dishes. The classic poutine is fries (usually thicker cut), brown gravy, and cheese curds. It works as a great base for creative chefs.
I was drawn to the breakfast poutine. The combination of gravy, sausage, eggs, cheese and fries was excellent. I was super happy with my meal. They have a larger menu that features all-day breakfast and plenty of cafe style dishes like burgers and sandwhiches. But if you have never had poutine before and are poutine-curious, they certainly honor the original and make it fun with all the different combos.
I had a slice of their pie of the day, which was sweet potato pecan. Super delicious and a perfect pairing with the poutine plate.
The cafe itself is small and cozy with a colorful modern decor. It could also be a bit hard to see from the street. Street parking seemed to be fairly easy here. It gets tougher a few blocks down where all the shops...
Read moreWavy Gravy is such a sweet, little, upscale diner! I live in the neighborhood and have been twice so far, once for breakfast and once for lunch. I tried their veggie dog, tuna avocado sandwich, and the sourdough pancakes (not all in one sitting of course haha). If you're coming to weekend brunch the sourdough pancakes are a must! There's a large variety of beverages to choose from as well. Don't sleep on the Arnold Palmer slushie! The atmosphere itself is very cozy and bright and the gentleman who served us was very sweet.
UPDATE: I just went on their website and noticed on the home page that they lost their lease and are hoping to find a new location. This bums me out royally because I always want mom and pop places like this to thrive - I wish landlords made it easier! Hoping Wavy Gravy will find a new location and will serve up those delicious sourdough...
Read moreI'll start of by saying I'm from Montreal, Quebec and my partner has also lived there so we've had our fair share of poutine in Canada. So when LAist has an article about poutine in LA, we had to come try this one. It looked good in the photos and it's only 15min from our place, done. We each for the hamburger poutine and the gravy and fries were spot on. It was probably the best sauce I've had on a poutine outside of Quebec. My partner tells me the cheese was good and squeaky as it should be. We also tried the NYC dog and it was delicious. Loved everything about it. Everyone we worked with there was very friendly. The restaurant even has Nanaimo bars and ketchup chips for sale! One suggestion to the owners/chef - please, please make a pastrami poutine to also get us a version close to a Montreal smoked...
