First, there are many good things to say about Pepe’s. Their chips and salsa are some of the best around but not as good as Ramirez or Don Juanz. Their food is usually pretty good depending on what you order, but they appear to use melted velveeta for their cheese sauce. What has become a serious issue is their dramatic price increases. They have jacked the price up astronomically on everything, especially in comparison with places like Trejo’s and Nicky’s. Trejo’s and Nicky’s food is much better, but the edge definitely goes to Pepe’s on the chips and salsa. Trejo’s definitely has the best service out of the 3. Pepe’s has now also started charging almost $2.00 for using a debit or credit card, so along with the substantial menu price increases it has become a restaurant that doesn’t offer enough in return for what it costs to eat there. I just spent $53.00 plus a tip on a lunch for me and my son. The $2.00 charge for not using cash will cost them a lot more in the long run and is a bad business practice, especially when we tip to help supplement their...
Read moreThis used to be our "go to" place. My sister has gone here regularly for many years. We were there a few weeks ago with her son and our Mom. My sister and I had cheese enchiladas with red sauce and my nephew had chicken enchiladas with green sauce. We each asked for extra sauce when we ordered. The red ones came with about a tablespoon on them and my nephew's had maybe three drops, NOT exaggerating. We asked for more sauce and the VERY unfriendly waitress brought us each a small bowl. We were charged three dollars each for them, for what should've been there to begin with. There was one other table occupied while we were there. The TV had cartoons on SO loud it was nerve racking. We asked the unfriendly waitress if she could please turn it down. Never happened. We have always loved this place and their red sauce is great but we found another place today, Taqueria San Miguel off of Barksdale Blvd. It was better than Pepes and had MUCH friendlier service with Mexican music playing at a very...
Read moreFood was okay but the ambiance was ruined with super bright LED lighting making what might otherwise be a good atmosphere.
Also, the food was expensive (particularly for Mexican food). I’m not used to spending $48 for two people on Mexican food. We had two entrees and two sodas- no alcohol. I ordered the enchiladas supremas for $17. They charged me another $3 (w/o telling me) when I asked for one beef and one chicken. If I got two of either it would have been no charge. So $20 for that was a bit much if you ask me.
So, after tip it was almost $60. If I’m going to spend $60 on food somewhere it certainly isn’t going to be on Mexican food. I spend less when I go to Blind Tiger and the wife gets a drink.
Again, the food was decent but with so many good options for Mexican food in town I just don’t see the need to drop $60...
