We had a horrible experience here. My wife and I brought our three young kids in for dinner.
We started with the chips, salsa, and guacamole. The guacamole was ok, but the salsa unfortunately tasted like dirty leather.
We ordered apple juice for our kids, which we noticed at the end was $5 each for a small plastic bottle of juice, which is crazy. I got a house margarita, which tasted mostly like water.
When the food came out, my plate and my wife’s plate were scorching hot, which they mentioned, but before the server finished putting everything down, she held the scorching plate right next to my one-year-old, who (as one-year-olds do) reached for it and grabbed it, which burned her hand. The server gave us a bag of ice after several minutes of my daughter screaming, but that was about it. After taking the next five minutes to calm her down and ice her hand, we tried our food. I had the chile Colorado enchiladas, which I ate , but they were quite bland. My wife got two street tacos, shrimp and chicken. The chicken was well over cooked and dry and the shrimp was very bland, and possibly undercooked. She didn’t end up eating most of her dish. We got cheese quesadillas with fries for the kids, which seemed fine overall. However, the metal fry baskets for the kids fries were hotter than they should have been, especially for a kids plate and I ended up having to dump out the fries and remove them.
When the bill came, there was no compensation for them having burned my daughter’s hand, no manager came to apologize, nothing. The bill was over $100. We said something at that point and they ended up taking my wife’s entree off since it was barely eaten. The server then walked away before we paid, and with all the commotion up to this point, we were losing the kids attention so my wife had to leave with them while I waited for the server to come back. Waited another five minutes and was finally able to pay and leave.
We take our kids to restaurants often, but this was by far the worst experience we’ve ever had when taking them out. Additionally, the food was way overpriced, especially for the quality. And the temperature of the plates our entrees were served on was flat out dangerous. They were hot to the point I couldn’t even reposition my plate on the table for several minutes after it was served.
Needless to say, we will not...
Read moreI’ve driven past Azul Fuego more times than I can count, always telling myself, one of these days I need to try that place. Well, today was finally the day—and it did not disappoint!
We arrived in the quiet hours between lunch and dinner, which turned out to be perfect. The main dining room still held the remnants of a bustling lunch crowd, but we were seated right away and opted for the spacious patio. Getting there took us through another cozy dining area, and outside we found a large shaded patio complete with a stage for live music, a play area for kids (a thoughtful touch), and an outdoor bar that likely comes alive on weekends. With only a couple of other tables filled, it felt relaxed and inviting.
At first, service was a little slow to start, but once our waiter arrived, things quickly picked up. While waiting, we had plenty of time to browse the menu, and once we ordered, appetizers and cocktails came out promptly. The guacamole, queso, and chips were spot on, and the cocktails were a refreshing start.
For entrées, we ordered a variety to share: a taco salad, tuna ceviche, and fish tacos. Each dish was beautifully plated, portions were generous, and every bite tasted fresh, flavorful, and clearly housemade. The ceviche was bright and refreshing, the taco salad a hearty favorite, and the fish tacos truly stood out. Our table was full of oohs and aahs as we passed plates around.
Unfortunately, we didn’t save room for dessert, but that just gives me an excuse to return. By the end of our meal, our waiter had more than redeemed himself—friendly, attentive, and quick to refill and check in.
From its striking blue exterior with the sunny yellow door to the lively yet relaxed atmosphere and fresh, authentic flavors, Azul Fuego is a gem in Louisville. Safe to say, I’ll...
Read moreOur waitress was great. My low service score is on the bartender. I ordered a glass of Chardonnay for $9.00. I got a scant 4oz pour. Next, I ordered a draft beer to have with dinner. It came with 1.5 inches of foam in a regular sized pint glass.
My meal was delicious. I had the pollo la crema. The rice and beans were nondescript. Not bad but not great. Tortillas were store bought. My husband had the chicken enchiladas and gave them a 5 out of 10 on flavor. Again, not bad, but not great.
Chips and salsa were very good but cost $5.00.
Overall, definitely not worth $90.00 for 2 dinners and 2 drinks.
We really love supporting local restaurants and would love to see this place make it. I think they have potential but need to make some tweaks. First, don’t use Sonoma Cutrer as the house wine. Serve something less expensive and offer a 6 or a 9 ounce pour. Offer a higher end wine for those customers who want to pay for it.
We didn’t try the margaritas, but I also read another review complaining about the tiny margaritas that were mostly ice.
Second, chips and salsa are almost always free at Mexican restaurants. I would add a buck to the entree prices to cover the cost.
If you want happy customers, make sure they feel like they are getting a good value for their money. We have so many wonderful Mexican restaurants to choose from, one this expensive will need to be outstanding in order to compete. Not there yet.
We’ll continue to monitor the reviews and see if things improve and if yes, we’ll give them another chance...
