Extremely disappointed with this establishment. We had ordered catering for a party including a large cannoli tray. The chips were a bit strange, as they had crumbly strings hanging off the bottom of them. Turns out this was because BUGS had been snacking on the chips. When I got to the bottom on the tray, I found it covered in bugs. It was disgusting and horrifying. Our guests who ate the cannoli dip had an upset stomach the next day. I went to the restaurant to bring it to their attention and they apologized and said a manager would contact me. They did refund the money, but as significant of an event as this was, I definitely expected a manager to call. No manager ever contacted me. When we went back into order another catering order three weeks later, we brought it back up to their attention, and informed them that no manager had ever reached out to us. They stated that there’s nothing that they can do, not even give a small discount on our next catering order. My husband then went in few days later to add to our catering order, and actually talked to the owner and told him about the bug situation in the cannoli dip. His level of horror was not what you would expect for a restaurant owner who was just told that there were BUGS in his food. They did nothing for us, and seem to be unfazed by it, as if it was something that occurs regularly. Do not order food from here, especially the cannoli tray.
UPDATE: Despite the bad experience we had, we decided to give Collegeville bakery another try. Again, we were disappointed. No bugs in our food this time, but the pizza was not great - it was burnt and the toppings were clumped up like someone just threw them on carelessly. Do yourself a favor and go to Tosco's. Their pizza is DELICIOUS, the restaurant is immaculate, they answer the phone when you call, the staff is always pleasant and helpful, and the owners are kind and friendly. It’s 5 minutes down the road and...
Read moreGrowing up nearby, I always went to the deli across the street from this bakery. I never really enjoyed the bakery, because of the difference in quality compared to the deli. Since the deli closed, I’ve only come here on rare occasions, and honestly, every time I leave, I leave disappointed.
Today for lunch, I decided to give them another shot. I ordered the Chicken Cutlet Diablo, a more traditional Italian-American hot hoagie, and asked for pesto on the side because it sounded like it could work well. When I arrived, I said hello to my friend who works there and chatted with the staff. The people and the environment are always great; there’s never been an issue with the service.
When I got back to work and opened my sandwich, the look and smell had me optimistic. Unfortunately, from the first bite to the last, I was disappointed again. The bread has always been a letdown, it’s more like a big breadstick than proper sandwich bread, especially for an Italian hoagie. The chicken cutlet was tough, lacking flavor, and tasted like it had been made days ago, possibly frozen and reheated under a heat lamp. The cheese was sliced too thick and all stacked at the bottom, so some bites were just bread and cheese.
The peppers were great, and the heat from the soppressata was nice, but overall the sandwich lacked flavor. The pesto ended up being the saving grace, adding the flavor the rest of the sandwich was missing. Without it, I don’t think I would’ve finished. For a bakery they surely do get a lot of things from their partnership, if they would bake and make more things in house and fresh daily they would be amazing cause they have no problem with a menu or ideas. Definitely will come back for “their” bread and tomato pie but definitely staying away from the kitchen side of things for a while again. Wasn’t worth the...
Read moreCollegeville Italian Bakery is a small wonder and a best kept secret in MontCo. It’s so worth the trip - I was talking to a guy who had a mighty order of hoagie rolls. Dozens and dozens of ‘em. We were chatting and apparently, he is a restaurant owner from MD. He came all that way for Collegeville rolls. It’s also the first place I hit when I come back from traveling. I am a long time, frequent patron. Pizza to sandwiches to good pasta entrees that taste like homemade because they are. They score major points with me because they serve Bassett’s Ice Cream.
Family and community oriented, these owners always say “Hello!” with a smile. This is really the hangout for family and friends.
This is the best Italian Wedding Soup I have ever enjoyed. All of their soups are special but that one takes the cake. They also have cakes, assorted Italian cookies, pastries and seasonal must haves like that beautiful Easter bread right now. Collegeville also sells Stock’s pound cake and other local small business goods like Reppert’s Chocolate and Asher’s; a full Italian deli with all the salads and freshly sliced lunch meats, etc. I already mentioned the bread and rolls but the assortment of those is off the hook.
They have case after case of their own tomato sauce along with fresh pastas and specialty baked goods imported from Italy. There’s always something fantastic cooking here and large parties are just as welcome as lunch or dinner for two. They also cater and if you take a look at their clientele, you should know that Collegeville Bakery is beloved by their community. They are known for their tomato pie, which is a notable crowd pleaser. Show up in jeans, show up in a suit, you’ll fit right in because this place is all about Family and far-and-wide friends. I love...
