Sammy’s Bullfrog Cafe is a brunch restaurant nestled in Harleysville at the end of a small strip of businesses. Sammy’s looks like a typical small town cafe. It is anything but. The menu is not the typical eight page diner menu that looks like an oversized laminated greeting card filled with a hundred cliche menu items. Sammy’s offers a concise and creative menu, featuring breakfast and lunch along with delicious daily specials.
Breakfast menu standouts include Chicken and Waffles, Brussel Sprout Skillet, and Breakfast Croquettes. Just listen to the description of the croquettes and tell me you’re not ready to grab a fork and dig it: Two cornflake crusted croquettes filled with bacon, sausage, ham, pork roll and cheese topped with creamed dried beef served with two eggs any style, home fries, and toast.
If lunch is what you’re looking for, you can’t go wrong with the Hot Roast Beef Sandwich, the Bullfrog Burger, or the Corned Beef Rachel.
While the favorites never fail, the daily specials offer inventive and often decadent options. Take Cinnamon Raisin Walnut French Toast topped with fresh berries, salted caramel drizzle and cream cheese icing. Try Sammy’s Homemade Chicken Salad served over mixed greens, fresh berries, fresh figs, toasted almonds, feta cheese, every bagel honey mustard dressing. Or a Churro Style Waffle bursting with cinnamon topped with berries and Nutella.
At any restaurant food is paramount. Sammy’s food is some of the best around. They excel in other areas too. Servers are attentive and friendly. The place is welcoming and homey. They offer prompt take out service. The only disappointment is when specials or menu items go away. I’m looking at you, Wilford Brimley. Not the actor, but a favorite menu item of fried chicken, scrambled with cheddar, bacon, and hollandaise on a glazed donut. Pictured is the Brimley 2.0 which replaces bacon with pork roll and the donut with a waffle. It may be better for my cholesterol levels that these are not permanent fixtures on the menu. Variety and delicious creations make Sammy’s so unique.
Menu items may change. Specials may change. The constant is that the food is excellent. Not just excellent for a small town like Harleysville. Excellent, as in, the best brunch...
Read moreLocated in a rather small nondescript strip mall off of a main street, Sammy's offers several pleasant surprises. The packed parking area we found Saturday midmorning should have been a clue what to expect. Upon entering the trendy decorated establishment we were greeted by a spirited room crammed full of patrons eating and several waiting to be seated. After a short wait we were guided to our table and offered menus. A quick look at the options had our imaginations peaked to what proved to be a new breakfast experience for us. There certainly was all of the usual breakfast fare. Then there were many more innovative choices that likely were much of the the reason for the popularity of the place. Taking our time to peruse our choices, one of us decided on the pound cake french toast with fresh berries and vanilla cream, and the other chose the less adventuresome Eggs Benedict. The french toast presentation was worthy of a photo and absolutely delectable and well proportioned. The Eggs Benedict were as good as they get with quality ham substituting for the Canadian bacon. If one were to quibble, the Hollandaise sauce was flavorful though quite thin. The service was a bit slow yet pleasant and accomodating. The prices were commensurate with the quality of the ingredients and innovativeness of the menu. Sammy's likely will become our go-to place for an above the usual place...
Read moreFirst of all, let’s start with the coffee. Many times, the coffee at a diner or cafe is watered down yuck. Not here. I have finally found a place that has coffee as good as what I make at home: theirs is a specialty brand-top shelf, and brewed nice and strong. Yes, please, and thank you! Our first visit, a Sunday noon, had many people waiting for a table. But Sammy’s service staff is friendly and efficient-we we seated surprisingly quickly. Cheerful, low-key ambiance-lots of plants in windows, a collection of quirky mugs for hot drinks, a counter with stools on the kitchen side.
My daughter chose the brisket mac-n-cheese bowl, which was customized for her-sans broccoli and tomato. Deliciously creamy cheeses, flavorful large bites of brisket. Gourmet comfort.
Since they had just run out of the shrimp and grits special, I decided on the crab cake sandwich. So glad I did-one of the best crab cake sandwiches I’ve ever had. With a side of hand cut fries-total bliss. Asked for and received lemon slices for the sandwich, might have been nice to see dill pickle company, but I can hardly quibble with a sandwich such a delicious star of the plate. We are fans of The Frog-will definitely be...
