A Hidden Gem at Uncle John’s — The Skirt Steak That Changed My Friday
After a long week of grinding it out, I walked into Uncle John’s Bar on Friday like I always do—ready for a cold Coors Light to take the edge off. No big expectations, just a routine wind-down. I grabbed a menu without much thought, figuring I might go for some chips and salsa. But then, something caught my eye: the skirt steak platter. At Uncle John’s? A bar? I was intrigued, skeptical, but curious enough to roll the dice.
What I got was nothing short of a revelation.
This wasn’t some bar-food version of steak. No, this was legit. Juicy, tender, seasoned and seared just right—the kind of steak that usually runs $30+ at the nicer spots around southwest Chicagoland. But here it was for $19.99, and dare I say, it held its own against any of them. I could’ve easily put down a second one without thinking twice—and believe me, I seriously considered it.
Uncle John’s may be known as a neighborhood bar, but with dishes like this, the kitchen is putting in real work. Most places get you in for the beer and hope you tolerate the food. Here, it’s the other way around: the food brings you in, and the beer just sweetens the deal.
If you’re in the area, don’t sleep on this place. Come for the skirt steak, stay for the vibe. I know I’ll be...
Read moreWhat a hidden gem. We ate there last night after officiating a football game at Lyons Township. Anyhow, their kitchen was open late so we went on over.
First, they bring out chips and salsa--had not clue it had a lot of Mexican food. These are home made chips and they are out of this world. And the salsa was amazing! The chips and salsa seemed unlimited...5 guys, and they brought out three...and more later.
I got the steak tacos--cilantro and onions on flour tortilla. My buddy got the al pastor, and another guy got chicken or corn tortillas. They were amazing! Another guy got the pita sandwich with chicken and loved it..and the fries were delicious.
My steak tacos were fantastic. One more thing, we also got the homemade guac...made fresh when we ordered it. Delicious.
While the food was great, the service was even better--I'm sorry I didn't get the owner's name, but he was all over us with service...refilled drinks, more chips, more salsa, checking in...top notch. More people need to get out here...when I'm in the area again, I'll head back on over!
Thanks for a great meal...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at Uncle John's and was absolutely blown away by their skirt steak. From the first bite, it was clear this wasn't just any steak – it was perfectly cooked, incredibly well-seasoned, and wonderfully juicy. It's rare to find a skirt steak prepared with such precision, truly a testament to their kitchen's skill.
The accompanying sides were just as impressive, perfectly complementing the star of the show. The Charro beans were flavorful, the cebollitas added a delightful zing, and the rice was a great staple. But the real standout for me was the cheese-filled banana pepper – a unique and delicious addition that elevated the whole plate.
I would definitely recommend Uncle John's to anyone looking for an exceptional meal, especially if you're a fan of a perfectly executed skirt steak. I can't...
