I have been here several times since there isn't much to choose from in Macomb unless you are going to a fast food joint. It is one of the better places to eat, but that isn't saying much.
You do get good size portions. Personally, I think their food is okay, but nothing spectacular. I have had their Lips (which are large breaded chicken strips), and don't care for them, although, my son loves them. He also likes the chickquito w/BBQ sauce instead of hot sauce. We always get their Bacon Cheeseburgers and are good sized. The thing I don't care for is they use a lot of garlic salt in them. We called in a to-go order on Thursday and I requested no garlic salt. Well, they forgot to leave it off, and they forgot my mayo. They also forgot my son's BBQ sauce for his chickquito...which is extremely aggravating since he loves their BBQ sauce.
They also carry the lattice fries (or waffle fries), but it seems like every restaurant here does. I absolutely despise these things! If a business wants to use them, fine, but have regular ones too. I am originally from a town 2 hrs Southeast from here, and I have only ran across these a couple times in my life in closer towns. At least they offered regular fries too.
The best item, in my opinion, is their loaded spud and are MASSIVE! They are probably the best baked potatoes I have EVER had! They are crisp on the outside and rubbed lightly with oil, sea salt, and sprinkled with pepper (which I could live without the pepper)...it doesn't need it. The only gripe I have with these, they don't add butter to them before adding the toppings. They don't even include butter unless you ask. I tried asking them one time to add the butter first and then the toppings, I got butter in a little cup instead.
It is a theme of a sports bar and grill, which is very popular with the college kids her from WIU. If you are into that sort of thing, this is your place. They are usually very crowded, but it's a nice atmosphere if you don't mind...
Read moreDespite getting glowing reviews from the locals, my experience at Chicks on the Square was less than stellar.
My party ordered the chips and salsa as an appetizer after our server assured us the salsa was homemade. The freshly poured from the bag chips paired perfectly with the salsa that tasted suspiciously like the mild Tostitos salsa from the local grocery store - so much for homemade.
For our second appetizer, we ordered the waffle-cut fries, which were typical freezer bag to deep fryer bar fare. The one thing that stood out was a couple of semi-frozen fries at the bottom of the plate.
I ordered the Chicken Lip Wrap. As soon as my laconic server delivered my entrée, I realized I chose unwisely. It did not even pass the eye test as my meal was enveloped by a waxy, largely flavorless tortilla with a greenish hue that only the wicked witch of the west could love. Things did not get much better on the interior of my wrap, filled with pre-grated orange cheese, chopped iceberg lettuce and two "chicken lips".
The bland lip sauce inside of the wrap soaked the breading, making it slough off into a soggy pile of mush. Without the breading, all that remained was large stick of unseasoned, rather chewy white meat...just not my deal, sorry.
For sheer suckitude, the grilled spinach pizza took the grand prize. Its razor thin pepperoni added no flavor. The limp, thin crust added absolutely no texture and the institutional-grade cheese provided little flavor but added a lovely greasy sheen to the top of the pie. By far, the worst component of this dish was the foul creamy spinach sauce...epic fail. My 18 year old could only stomach a couple of pieces before throwing...
Read moreI’ve ordered twice since they started curbside only, and both times they’ve messed up my order. The first time I ordered and 8 ounce soup with 1 cup of green onions and 1 cup of cheese, no bacon. They gave me 1 cup of cheese, green onions and bacon all mixed together. The second time, we ordered 2 things of lip fries and 2 things of potato soup. The chicken in both of the lip fries were burnt and very chewy from being over cooked. I asked for 2 cups of green onion and 2 cups of shredded cheese and they gave me 3 cups of onions and 1 cup of cheese when it clearly says on the ticket 2 of each thing. My friends have ordered multiple times since curbside started, and we’ve noticed that it’s being made very very sloppy. I understand with everything going on, mistakes might be made but when it happens every time we order, that shows they don’t care about the orders. And the second time we paid $40 for the food, and it wasn’t worth what we paid. Chicks is amazing, but it’s just getting out of hand with the...
