Voted Best of Bergen 2023 and celebrating 48 years, this family-owned and operated establishment is located off a busy northbound Route 17 in Mahwah. Upon entering, it’s much larger inside than it looked, very pleasant, cozy., clean, and charming. The State Line Diner owes their success to using high-quality ingredients, including quality beef and fresh fish. Their homemade desserts are also made on premises. My partner and I paid them a visit today for brunch. The place was packed, and I was relieved when we got seated right away. The menu was extensive, like most diner menus, running for 20 pages with breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as serving alcoholic beverages. As an appetizer, I decided on a small chicken matzoh ball orzo soup. It was tasty, delicious, and different. For the main, we got the Irish Benedict (two poached eggs and corned beef on an English muffin) with home fries and the Chicken Cutlet Avocado Sandwich with Bacon, accompanied by steak fries. The sandwich was cooked perfectly and accompanied by a large portion of fries, cole slaw, and a pickle. Unfortunately, one of the eggs in the Benedict was a bit runny, while the other was fine. The price was reasonable, with huge portions. Service is usually quite diner-efficient with a lot of care, and our server was Ozzy. We can see why patrons put this diner on their favorites list, and we can recommend it.

My best friend and I visit this diner every week for lunch and normally sit with a wonderful server named Karen. Top notch service. My husband and I go also with another married couple for dinner sometimes with our children too. So it is needless to say we spend a lot of money here. This past weekend my best friend and I went at 1:30pm and had an appetizer and later two entrees that were both open faced so a little more difficult to eat. Little did we know we were punching a clock. We ordered desserts at 3pm. As our server Ivan who is extremely nice and accommodating is about to place down our desserts, a very rude and disrespectful manager named Toni came to our table and told us that we have overstayed our 90 minute time limit. Again, we didn’t realize we were punching a clock. There was no wait when we got there so we never had our names down with a time that we came in so As to suppose someone could mark the “time seated”. My suggestion to Toni is either inform people when you seat them so they can make the decision if they want to stay or possibly put a 90 minute countdown timer on each table so diners can play “beat the clock”. What an enjoyable dining experience. All kidding aside because we were SO embarrassed. She was extremely rude and degrading and other customers heard her and to be honest the people across from us in a booth of 4 came in at the same time. She didn’t say anything to them. I guess our $60 wasn’t as much as their table. There were so many empty tables when this happened so my best friend and I were just flabbergasted. Other people who heard her were looking around at the empty tables and looked back at us and shrugged in confusion. She left immediately after scolding us like we were school children. It was the exact time her shift ended. She just couldn’t let it go and make our dining experience a pleasant one. We spoke to the next manager a nice gentleman who was very kind and apologized for her and said he would personally speak to her and the owner about this. It is a shame because the food is very good and the desserts are to die for but to have the feeling of being constantly watched and timed ruins the experience for anyone wanting to frequent the establishment. There are plenty of other places/diners in the area we can go to where our presence will be welcome and our money will be accepted without punching a clock. I am attaching photos of what the place looked like because she said “it was busy and we were taking up a table”. (As shown in the pictures she should have been highly embarrassed to say one word to us. Normally a manager comes over to ask if everything is alright..nope not Timekeeper Toni) Shame on you Toni. You just lost the diner my best friend, me and my husband, our children, and our married couple friends. With Covid going on now that is considered a great loss.

Two visits equal results. My first visit ever, I had the French toast. Ok... sorry for the partially eaten food in the pic. I dove right in cause I like my food hot and that's exactly how it came. Nice and hot. 2nd, HUGE thing... the butter was spreadable immediately. I've NEVER gone to a diner where I could easily spread butter from those little portion cups. The butter usually comes frozen so by the time you finish spreading it over the food your food is cold. 3rd, the fruit was REALLY fresh. Strawberries were bright and ripe and the bananas were perfect. 4th VERY important factor... the service was wonderful. My waitresses were attentive, thorough and pleasant. I'm so sorry I didn't get their names. They certainly deserve mentioning. My second visit, 4 days later from the first, was mostly a repeat of the first visit except this time I had blueberry pancakes (fresh not filling). Butter was still spreadable, fruit was fresh, service (albeit a different waitress) was equally pleasant. * I wasn't a fan of the coffee but I won't hold that against them.

I’ve eaten here for years and always had good experiences until tonight. I was there with my family. My wife ordered pancakes which she felt were over cooked. When the waitress asked how everything came out, my wife said they looked over cooked and if they can be remade lighter. The waitress said no problem and takes them away. Then 2 min later an old Donald trump looking guy scurry’s over with pancakes in a confrontational tone saying that the pancakes are exactly how they are supposed to be. And if they were any lighter they would be liquid still. He then tries to explain the pancakes in his hands are a new set that are just as brown proving that they are supposed to be that way. He didn’t realize my wife started cutting into them partially which left a noticeable indent in the top showing us that they were the original pancakes. At someone his age you would think he would have learned customer service by now. Super unprofessional for absolutely no reason. He took a normal situation and escalated it so that everyone next to us could hear.

This diner is convenient for us since we live just right around the corner and so since we were in a rush, we decided to come here for breakfast on 11/28/2021. To start with, this place isn't ideal in the pandemic world. No social distancing set-ups and protocols. Tables are too close to each other and not all employees wear masks. The food is mediocre and presentation is very sloppy. I ordered a large English muffin with butter and jelly and one of the jelly packet was spoiled. My nephew and husband visited the restroom and came back very disgusted. For a very busy place like this, even rated 4-Stars, they should have dedicated resources to clean the bathroom regularly. We also came here for salad dinner the week prior and I ordered State Line salad. The center of the iceberg lettuce in my plate tasted funny and lo and behold, I came home and had the runs the entire night. I do not recommend this diner. Would recommend Suburban Diner in Paramus instead or the Mahwah Pizza and Restaurant for good food and good price.

Me and my buddies come here after doing some rock climbing nearby, and so we have eaten here quite a bit. Yesterday we came around 8pm, being a random Wednesday in April we imagined the place wouldn't be too packed but boy were we wrong. The place was busy, and although we were sat pretty quick, the appetizers did take quite some time to come out, around 25 minutes. We shared loaded carnitas fries and calamari which were both great. We got to enjoy the food while looking at a classic diner feel with booths and a counter beside us. The place was very well maintained and clean. Around 10 minutes after we finished our main courses came out, we had Salmon, Penne and Meatballs, and a Patty Melt. All of which were great. One of my buddies also got a Stateline Martini and he really enjoyed it. Staff was very kind throughout and took care of us well. Parking is also really easy since they have a lot of spots for cars right outside the place. We'll definitely be making our way back when we find ourselves in New York again!
