Off the Hook doesn’t just set the bar, they are the bar. From kitchen to table, the standard of excellence is unmistakable. The wait staff exemplifies professionalism: knowledgeable, polished, and genuinely attentive. They deliver a seamless dining experience, effortlessly reciting each special and remembering every order without taking notes—an impressive detail that speaks volumes about their training and dedication. The chef and kitchen staff are also on point. I have never experienced anything lacking in preparation. It’s this level of service, paired with the restaurant’s culinary precision, that makes Off the Hook a benchmark for fine dining in the area.
The evening began with a special appetizer featuring a beautifully composed plate of seafood: a perfectly cooked crab cake, two jumbo shrimp, and two ichiban skewers showcasing swordfish, salmon, and tuna. Each component was prepared with precision. The fish was cooked to ideal temperature, tender, flaky, and deeply flavorful. The crab cake was exactly what a crab cake should be: minimal filler, generous lump crab meat, and a crisp, golden exterior.
For the entrée, the grouper with chorizo and cream sauce was another standout. The fish was cooked flawlessly, maintaining its delicate texture. While the sauce leaned more toward a light reduction than a true cream sauce, it still offered rich, smoky depth from the chorizo and complemented the grouper beautifully.
The clam chowder impressed as well, offering a classic, hearty flavor profile done with care and balance.
Dessert, however, was where the evening truly shined. The white chocolate macadamia nut mousse with Chambord chocolate ganache was the undeniable star—luxurious, smooth, and indulgent without being heavy. Each bite struck a perfect harmony between sweetness and texture. To accompany it, the pumpkin cheesecake latte was a seasonal delight. It was rich, aromatic, and beautifully presented. While quite decadent, it served as a fitting finale to a...
Read moreI rarely write negative reviews, but I had been dining here for 6 years and have seen the service and quality decline greatly. Though the bathrooms were clean and the management and hostesses were amicable and welcoming, the server we had was inattentive when we were speaking to her, forgetting various parts of our orders multiple times from drinks to sides, didn't seem like she was well-acquainted with the menu, and made us feel uncomfortable multiple times by too frequently coming to our table to check on us every 5-8 minutes asking if we were okay or good.
The food wasn't the same quality it had been in the past either, the temperature of the fish not consistent regardless of whether it was the same fish. In the past, we had raved about the food and service, recommending others to dine at Off the Hook, so this feels like a complete let-down.
One of the busboys was aggressively and loudly scraping food into a to-go container right at the table, directly in front of my father and me. He seemed like he was having a bad day, and we tried to be friendly to cheer him up, but he had a bad attitude and barely spoke to us.
We had left most of the nine inch cake for the staff and had asked for them to only leave a quarter for us to take home, but we received less than a quarter of our cake which the server, instead of returning to us in the original cake box, smashed it into a to-go container, completely ruining the top of the birthday cake, and the container couldn't even close.
This was one of my favorite restaurants and had been for years, and I had brought multiple friends, family, and colleagues here before, and I'm sad to say that I won't be returning. You can get better food and service at the Grand Concourse or Eddie V's especially with...
Read moreFrom start to finish this is one of the best meals my husband and I have had in a while. Our waiter thoroughly explained the menu and our water glasses never dipped below 3/4 full. Warm, delicious bread was served immediately as we perused an extensive wine list. The speciality cocktail list wasn’t long, but had a wide enough variety and several I was eying up before settling on a Merlot. We chose an appetizer featuring a jumbo lump crab cake, blackened shrimp, and Ichiban sampler. Honestly, I would have given the restaurant 5 stars based on the crab cake alone. Jumbo lump crab with inconspicuous breading that exceeded all that we just had a few weeks ago on our beach vacation. My husband had a side salad that was an excellent size and incredibly reasonable price for this caliber restaurant. I had a bite, but saved my stomach space for more bread. We chose main dishes that were specials of the day: sea bass and large scallops. The menu is extensive, with enough options to try something new and delicious on every visit, but I couldn’t pass up scallops on arugula (maybe I was feeling a little guilty for skipping the salad in favor or more bread?) served with a side of Brie and my husband couldn’t say no to a dish that boasted habanero peppers. Being our anniversary dinner, we were given free dessert and chose cheesecake topped with fresh cream and peaches with a side of a Napa valley wine reduction. We loved every part of the meal, but this was quite possibly the best cheesecake we’d ever tasted. If I could give Off the Hook 10 stars I would. Exceptional service, expansive menu, melt-in-your-mouth seafood, and a classy atmosphere. It’s just a gem, not a hidden one, so make sure to make a reservation… preferably several days...
