When I discovered I needed to climb 26 stairs to get to my room, I was discouraged, owing to a serious problem with my knee. But co-owner Jennifer greeted me at the entrance and, despite her slight physique, carried my luggage up the stairs while I hobbled behind. Later in my stay, when a lawyer in another state phoned to say he needed an affidavit from me; signed, notarized, and delivered back within the hour, I called on Jen for help. Shortly, she and a notary friend knocked on my door, printed document in hand. I signed it, the notary attested to it, and Jen scanned it and sent it back to the attorney. Can you name another lodging establishment that arranges house calls from notaries?||||Beyond exceptional service, the rooms are large and well-appointed. The very wide hallway sports a sparkling hardwood floor. The walls of the Inn and adjoining restaurant are accented with a large and eclectic collection of prints and original art, ranging from an image of an Iowa wind farm to a Picasso. The restaurant, presided over by Jen's husband J.P., offers excellent food, including a surprising (for Iowa) range of seafood; plus, of course, fine Iowa beef and pork. Food service is friendly and the waitstaff are both courteous and well-informed. J.P. adroitly "works the tables" like a politician, so you'll have a chance to visit with the owner about a wide range of subjects, if you want.||||Staying at the Tremont Inn is something of an adventure; you will probably remember the 26 steps, and you will surely remember the...

Read moreMy husband and I love boutique inns, and since our birthdays were on either side of our nieces wedding last weekend, we chose the Tremont.
The owners are very gracious, and very honest. The flight of stairs up to the rooms is steep, and I have knee issues, but there are handrails on both sides and since there were never crowds of people entering or leaving at the same time, it was fine.
The rooms are spacious and well-appointed. The bathrooms are modern and they supply high quality, sustainable bath products. (We were upgraded to a king room, which was super sweet.) The bed was firmer than I’m used to, but the pillows were so great that I slept well every night.
We ate at Tremont on Main our first night, arriving just before they closed the kitchen. The food was fantastic and the service impeccable.
We had breakfast at the Tremont Grille most of the days we were in town. Super convenient to get my morning espresso fix and again, the staff was awesome. They even made us breakfast even though we arrived later than their typical hours.
Both restaurants feature jazz and Great American Songbook background music, which is very relaxing.
I’m a huge proponent of “think global, buy local” and was so happy to support a local business.
(Their overview mentions that they’re LGBTQ friendly, and even though we’re straight, we try to support inclusive...
