Messy Fun with Crabs at Kahler’s Crab and Seafood

As a first-timer venturing into the world of crab dining, Kahler’s Crab and Seafood offered me an experience I won’t soon forget. Nestled in the heart of the area, this local gem might not boast opulent decor, but it compensates with flavorful crustaceans and friendly service.

Upon arrival, I was greeted by the friendly waitstaff who patiently guided me through the messy yet exhilarating process of crab consumption. Plastic table covers might seem odd at first glance, but they make perfect sense once you dive into the messy affair of shell cracking and meat digging.

Starting off with a piping hot bowl of cream of crab soup, I found myself pleasantly surprised by its rich flavor. The mozzarella sticks were basic yet satisfying. But the real star of the show was the hard shell crabs. Opting for six medium-sized specimens, I clumsily navigated through their shells with the help of neighboring diners, who graciously shared their expertise.

While my newfound acquaintances rated the crabs a respectable 3.5 stars, I couldn’t help but appreciate the communal aspect of the experience. With a BYOB policy and a lively atmosphere, Kahler’s Crab and Seafood is the perfect spot for a bib-clad gathering with friends.

However, despite the enjoyable camaraderie, I realized that crab dining might not be my cup of tea. Nevertheless, I’m grateful for the opportunity to try something new and would recommend Kahler’s to anyone seeking an unapologetically messy yet memorable dining adventure.

In summary, if you’re in the mood for good company and a messy feast, give Kahler’s Crab and Seafood a try. Just be prepared to get your hands dirty – and don’t forget to BYOB!

My girlfriends and I had lunch at Kahler’s yesterday, and it exceeded our expectations. It was our first visit, and not only was the food delicious, but the customer service from our server Mallory was exceptional. Reservations are HIGHLY recommended, and if you're planning to get the blue crabs, you can reserve them in advance. Here are the prices for blue crabs:

Males: Small: $37 per dozen Medium: $60 per dozen Large: $90 per dozen X-large: $120 per dozen Jumbo: $140 per dozen

Females: Small/Medium: $35 per dozen Large: $65 per dozen Jumbo: $175 per dozen

Note: For orders of large and up, you can add shrimp and corn for $18.99.

We tried several appetizers: crab deviled eggs, cheese French fries, and hush puppies. The crab deviled eggs were decent but could have used some sweet relish. The cheese French fries were perfect—hot, fresh, and lightly seasoned with Old Bay. One of my friends found the hush puppies dry and preferred butter over the honey they were served with.

For the main course, we ordered three dozen large male blue crabs. They were fresh, hot, well-seasoned, and meaty with sweet meat. The accompanying butter was unnecessary. Besides the crabs, the shrimp were outstanding—the best I've ever had. We ordered them with onions, a Maryland specialty, and I now prefer my shrimp this way. The shrimp were XL and served with cocktail sauce. The corn was also sweet and tasty, even without butter.

The ambiance was great and family-friendly. Kahler’s is a BYOB establishment with the following rules: only unopened beer and wine are allowed; no other drinks or personal containers are permitted, with no exceptions.

Overall, we had a fantastic time and can’t...

Only thing better than the crabs was the service!

My wife and I were looking for a place to go out and eat crabs for "date night". (We usually just get them and bring them home.) I asked for recommendations on Facebook and got several.

We started out at a local place, and paid for our drinks and left when we found out that all they had were smalls and mediums at $45 and $55/dozen. Next we went to another place up the road and (asking this time before were were seated) were told $65, $85, and (large) $120/ a dozen! (Do the math! That's $10 a friggin' crab! @ $120/dozen, those crabs better be something from out a a science fiction movie!)

We left there and decided to drive to Rosedale and give Khaler's a try. I called first though, and got prices. They sounded a lot more reasonable, so I said "We're on our way!"

I've driven by this place dozens of times, and was always under the impression that is was carry out only. (It looks small from the outside.) But I was pleasantly surprised when we went in. It's not some "fancy restaurant" wannabee. It reminded me of the type of "crab house", that I was used to growing up. Cool! :)

I got the largest ones. $55/dozen, and my wife got females for $35 a dozen. They were good sized and heavy! I could only eat 9. (I can usually polish off a dozen by myself) and she could only eat five. We brought the rest home.

Our waitresses were Kim and Kim. (Just say "Kim!" and somebody will come. Not that I had to even call them over, once.) You could never ask for a nicer couple of ladies. Very friendly. Very attentive. And made us feel right at home.

So happy we found this place. We will definitely be making it one of our...
