Came here for restaurant week as the sister restaurant grille 620 was a fabulous experience. Mad chef was a let down compared to the sister restaurant. Maybe I set a high expectation for them? Maybe it was restaurant week? We ordered the shrimp and grits, lamb with fritters, mussels, seafood pot, cheesecake, and creme brulee. Shrimp and grits are a personal favorite of mine. The grits were overcooked in my opinion. The tomatoe puree zesty sauce complimented the shrimp and grits nicely Lamb with fritters were a let down. It's a center lamb with fries. There is a nice mint ginger orange peel that is cooked with the lamb, but the fries were not a good compliment to the lamb. The grilled onions were a nice touch The mussels are deliscious. The soup is tangy with a deep flavored sauce. The rustic artisan break really provides a great amount of texture to dipping into the broth Seafood pot was another great dish. Consists of mussels, clams, and lobster. There is so much depth in the broth and it is much more deeper than the appetizer mussels as it is a main course. Desserts were decent but nothing extrodinary I my opinion. Service is good and there seems to be a nice crowd, but I just can't seem to justify the price here considering how much better grille 620 is. The price is comprable to the Stanford grille in Columbia which is quite a let down for me. I just can't find value in this restaurant for the price point.

Went for brunch the food was decent, not great. The staff, though, quite helpful with the menu, professional. I would like to go back for dinner because I had a burger which I enjoyed but nothing special

This was our first time here. We were doing a late lunch/early dinner on a lazy Saturday afternoon. Our first impression upon looking at the lunch and brunch menus was that they were a bit on the pricey side. We ordered guac and chips to start. Their only special of the day was cream of crab soup, so we each ordered a bowl and then shared appetizers of beef short rib tacos and shrimp & grits. Well, we ended up ordering more food than we needed. The very generous portion of guacamole could have easily served 4 people. And, it was superb. Likewise with the soup, we could have easily shared a bowl, especially since it was $9. We made a mistake of not asking how much the special was. However, it was very rich & silky and had quite a bit of crab meat. We each had a melt in your mouth short rib taco, then shared a bowl of shrimp & grits. The grits were creamy and the shrimp were done perfectly. All in all, quite a tasty 5 star dining experience; albeit a pricey lunch at $50 before tax and tip with only water to drink. I would rate them at $$$ to $$$$ based on the menu prices, but this is Howard County. And, we don't mind paying when the food is really good. Definitely recommend and will return; however, we would probably order less food next time.

Last Friday night I visited Mad chef with my wife and 2 other couples it was their 1st time eating at Mad chef. I have been a satisfied Patron for well over 3 years. When we arrived I was told Didn't have a reservation. However in a couple of minutes a table of 6 was available. We sat in the dining room and it was very loud, we asked to be moved they checked with Daniel new manager and they sat us outside. We all ordered drinks and appetizers as well as dinners. I ordered the Seafood Paella which I have gotten many times in the past. During this time I approached Daniel the new manager and handed him $10.00 tip and asked him it was my friends first time and his birthday do the best to accommodate since I had raved to them how great this place was. When the Seafood Paella was served it was loaded with Old bay seasoning, it was nothing like what we were use to eating in the past . I asked our waitress he was very accommodating what happened she said they had a new chef. We returned it and ordered the swordfish special it was over seasoned peppery, by this time my friends had finished their meals. I was not happy paid the bill not to make a stink and looked for the manager Daniel. We left and I called first thing in the morning. I told him about last nights problems and he preceded to tell me that we were a pain and a problem from the moment we came in. He told me that they have been doing phenomenal business now , not like when the old manager was here. He told me that I didn't like it don't come back and that $10.00 wasn't going to get me anything extra and that he was speaking for the owner Ali. Well I guess you never heard that the CUSTOMER is always RIGHT. I will not be back nor will the other friends I have introduced to mad Chef in the past or Grill 620. Daniel for your reference that you are not like the other manager I noticed you kept the $10.00 for yourself so I guess you do have something in common. You are rude unprofessional. If I wanted anything I am capable of paying for it since we spent $275.00 including 3 desserts 1 for the birthday friend. My advice to all who may want to dine @ Mad chef don't send anything back don't speak up or you too may be asked never to come back. Very sad for the owner with this type of...

My husband and I had oysters and cocktails at Grill 620 (one of our favorite restaurants) before going over to The Mad Chef. This was our first time trying the sister restaurant of the Grill 620. At the Mad Chef, we both ordered the Ribeye Steak dinner and pre-dinner cocktails while we waited. I believe I was given a dry red wine, rather than the Pinot Noir I ordered. But okay... I listened to a waitress at a nearby table telling a group that the "Chef" is really stubborn and would not allow substitutions for side dishes. We didn't need substitutions, but good to know, since I do have food intolerances. That's a deal breaker for me. And it is silly. Our food arrived. My husband immediately said something about how different my steak looked compared to his. Smaller, thinner. But okay... I started trying to eat the meat and quickly found it to be terribly chewy and overly fatty (even for ribeye!). I kept trying to eat, but I then I gave up and began to pull away the chewy fat to find the "eye". I ended up with a piece of steak 2" x 2" x 1/3". It was comparable to a half of a thin-sliced pork chop. Wow. Okay.... Before I could even try a bite of the little bit of meat I found, the waitress returned and took my plate back to get the kitchen to redo my order. All of this could be overlooked, until the "manager" intervened a few minutes later. "What is your problem?" is not the way to approach a customer. I answer back "Nothing. Take my food off the bill". He laughed, sneered and called me rude. I got up and walked across the street to Grill 620. I got a burger to take home, but I was fuming. As soon as I walked into Grill 620 (where they know us), one of the waitress came over to ask what happened. Why did I return to 620? Why am I ordering carryout? They are so kind there. My husband, meanwhile, finished his steak and joined me at 620. His dinner was okay, but he did not like the manager. And he wanted to finish and leave the waitress a tip. Of course my 620 burger was delish, but the manager at Mad Chef has spoiled my enjoyment of Grill 620 and the River Hill Bar...all owned by the same...

I went to Mad Chef on Saturday, 02/17/2024. It was early afternoon, and they were serving from the lunch menu. I ordered the Tuna Taquitos as an appetizer and the Fish & Chips for my entree. Those two dishes complimented each other nicely. The tuna was fresh and not over-cooked, nor was it dried out. The taco shell was fresh and crispy - still warm! The veggies & slaw were also very fresh and very tasty. The appropriate amount for an appetizer. The fish & chips were also fresh and perfectly done - not over-cooked. The breading on the fish was perfectly seasoned; too often dishes like this come out seasoned in the "more is better" style. Not these. This was just right - I could taste the subtle nuance of the herbs and spices, but they harmonized with the fish and did not overpower it. Same with the fries - salted & spiced just right, and not too much. I also tried the yucca frites, as I had never had yucca before. They were delicious! A good alternative to regular fries. I NEVER order dessert at restaurants, but I did on this day - everything thus far had been delicious, so I took a chance and ordered the bread pudding. It too was delicious! Delicate and not too sweet, with a wonderful texture and subtle flavor. I had an espresso with the bread pudding and it was the perfect dessert. The wait staff (Emily) was amazing as well! She knew the menu and could describe in detail all the dishes we asked about, and asked defining questions of us when we asked for specific recommendations from her. She was attentive during the meal, re-filling water glasses, asking if we needed anything, but Emily didnt haunt us, either. The service was perfect! I wholeheartedly recommend The Mad Chef, and can strongly recommend the dishes I described above. I look forward to my next trip to The Mad Chef! Parking spots...
