I'm very surprised by a few of the negative reviews here, as they run exactly opposite to my experiences with Sal's. For me, there is no better pizza north of Boston, and the fact that they deliver is a huge plus.
The pies are fantastic. Crisp, thin crust cooked perfectly. Flavorful sauce that's a key player in the flavor profile, but subtle enough to let the toppings shine. And the toppings are great. I ordered a sausage, onion, mushroom, and ricotta pie last night. I've never seen so much sausage on a pizza. And not the crumbly bits like you get from Dominos, I mean real, sliced Italian sausage. And big globs of ricotta...yum. The vegetables were also fresh and plentiful. It may have been the best pizza I've eaten in years. The Sal's family has honed their craft to a fine art, and the decades of dedication show in every slice.
I have a general rule that I don't give five stars to any establishment that doesn't have cloth napkins. The top review should be reserved for that level of dining, and four stars is more than enough for more casual fare. But I'm making an exception for Sal's. There's simply no reason to get your pizza...
Read moreThis is a franchise store. They won't offer you the XL deal for $9.99 on Monday and Tuesday. Although, this isn't noted on the website. I was treated rudely when I called in and asked for the deal. I guess I was supposed to already be educated that only corporate stores do this deal. I didn't order the first time I called because the girl I spoke to kind of hit a nerve. However, my kids kept asking me to try Sal's since we are new to New England and need a good go to pizza spot in Merrimack. So, I gave in. I figured we can start with a cheese pizza. Again, the service was not the best. The atmosphere made me feel unwelcome when I came to pick up the pizza. The pizza lacked the cheese, the only topping it had. I might give them another try with a pizza that has more toppings. The sauce was pretty tasty. The crust is good too. The lack of cheese...
Read moreThe pizza itself deserves 4 stars, but the rest of the experience is 1 star. I know the XL pizza is big, but $4.25 for a meat topping is a bit much, even for this economy. I ordered a medium specialty pizza with extra sauce. Mind you, I order my pizza with extra sauce at every pizza establishment I go to, my whole life. This is the only place ever that extra sauce has even been charged as a full topping (I've gotten a 50 cent charge before). On a medium pizza, that's $3.00, and you couldn't tell if there was hardly any sauce on there, much less $3.00 worth of extra sauce. Over $20 for a medium pizza is a bit extreme. I forgot when this happened once a few months ago, but I won't forget again, since I won't be coming back. If you want a cheese pizza, enjoy, if you want any toppings, be prepared to pay...
