This was our second visit since the new owners took over earlier this year and our first since the new menu was released. We were really looking forward to some new options on the menu. After looking over the new menu we were excited about many of the entrees. We selected the Chicken Broccoli Alfredo and the Pot Roast Platter based on the server's recommendation. Unfortunately, the excitement ended there. When we first sat down, our server took our drink order: a beer and an Old Fashioned. She seemed puzzled by the Old Fashion order when a specific bourbon (that we saw on the shelf behind the bar) was requested. After saying she was also the bartender, we were concerned. Nonetheless, we waited for the Old Fashioned. And waited. And waited. It was not busy in the restaurant. Our server seemed to only have two other tables. After 15 minutes our food arrived to our table, but still no Old Fashioned or even a mention of it. When I canceled the drink order she seemed relieved. The Alfredo sauce was extremely disappointing. Imagine thickened milk, and this was the "Alfredo sauce". Not a hint of parmesan cheese, no spices; it was truly one of the worst things I have ever eaten. The broccoli was clearly frozen and not seasoned. The chicken was dry. I had a few pieces of the penne pasta but couldn't eat anymore because it was drowning in the "sauce". I would imagine a hospital could have done a better job at the dish. The Pot Roast was very tender and the grilled veggies were good. Unfortunately, the meat was over salted making it almost impossible to eat.
Following the restaurant on Facebook, it seemed that this husband and wife team was really excited to begin their first venture in the restaurant industry and wanted to build relationships with existing customers and welcome new ones as they start fresh. Our first visit shortly after they took over we saw both of them standing behind the bar interacting more with the wait stafff and each other than any customers. We were a little surprised that they weren't walking around asking patrons about their meal, etc. On this last visit, the owners were sitting a few tables over from us eating with their family. With several other tables filled with customers near them, we thought that each time they'd get up to bus their own table that perhaps they'd speak with customers, or even offer a friendly smile. Nope. There is not the typical "front of house" hospitality that nearly every other restaurant in the world has. Not a single person (including our server) asked how our meal was. Even after she cleared the plate of barely eaten Chicken Broccoli Alfredo.
Before leaving, we placed a carry out order of Pretzel Bites and Spicy Italian Sandwich. The Pretzel Bites, as you can see in the photos, were overcooked and very hard. To add insult to injury, once we got home we found that the cheese sauce (which might have given the burnt/hard pretzel bits a fighting chance) was not in the to-go box.
Based upon this experience it makes it very difficult to recommend Bistro 4.0.7. I hope they are able to make it work as Cleves needs a good sit...
Read moreNick's is essentially the only locally-owned American cuisine place I can actually tolerate in the SW Ohio region; and I think that is due to the fact that they cook everything exactly the way my mother would, but season it better 😅
I love their french toast, liver and onions, and Kentucky Hot Brown. The hot brown almost tastes like chicken alfredo if chicken alfredo was an open faced sandwich. The french toast is the perfect medium between crispy and soft which is in every way preferrable to the deep fried garbage a lot of local places serve. Liver and onions are a treat anywhere I can find them. I have also previously enjoyed their taco salads and catfish. My absolute favorite menu item, however, is and will proabably remain the Fried Green Tomatoes.
They do occasionally offer off-menu specials. One time I visited and was ecstatic to see that they were offering hot slaw as a side dish that day. If you're unfamiliar, it is cole slaw mix, dry, drizzled with bacon grease and topped with bacon crumbles. This was a special treat my mom used to make for me when I was growing up and it tastes like home whenever I find it out and about.
I did take a star off because they have removed some items from the menu I really enjoyed. They used to have a meal served with soup beans (think like soupy pinto or navy beans cooked with ham hock) and corn bread which was my favorite meal growing up. I think it may have been removed from the menu during the pandemic as I wasn't in the habit of eating out often at that time.
I'm glad to see Nick still takes an active part in the operation of his restaurant. Every time I have been, he's made an appearance, and is quick to ask customers how everything is going with their meal and to give that feedback to his staff. Service is also continuously amazing and the staff give the impression they actually do enjoy taking care of you during your visit. The atmosphere is also very comforting. Think "grandma's house" in the absolute best way possible. They do also source a lot of their food locally, so you could call this "farm-to-table."
Ultimately, if you have someone in your circle that is a fan of breakfast foods or isn't a particularly adventurous eater, this is the place to get the best versions of their favorites while supporting a local business. This place is a town favorite and I've yet to see them not busy...
Read moreMy husband and I used to take our kids (15 -20 years ago), back when it was Cleves Drive Inn Restaurant, and decided to stop again on our way home for lunch on a Thursday. For all you folks out there saying this place is great, you would have thought the previous was the Crème de la Creme of restaurants! The service was good, not great We heard one waitress ask a group of 4 guys she obviously knew to cash out so she can leave ( we joked about that a bit). Don’t let the hostess seat you near the checkout- you will hear every personal conversation going on ( they seem to speak loudly so you can hear. I have my own problems lol!) I like the decor, but it hasn’t changed from when we went there 20 years ago, and it is looking not ‘run down’ but a bit worn out ( paint is fading/peeling and the railing dividers are dusty. I’m a housewife and I notice these things, but they’re not that bad). The main thing is their food. The food is ok, but not great. We both thought it was rather bland. My husband had the bacon cheeseburger and I had the po boy roast beef sandwich with a Cajun sauce and I was expecting it to be spicy, but I couldn’t taste it. There was barely any on the sandwich. I used my husband’s mayo for it. The au juice didn’t have much flavor either. But the reason I give the food a ‘2’ is because it is way overpriced for what you get. $14.99 for this sandwich and it comes with potato chips and a pickle spear! I I asked for fries instead, and got charged extra. For a $14.99 sandwich, it should COME WITH FRIES!! And maybe some Mac n cheese or coleslaw. Not CHIPS! My husband ordered a bacon cheeseburger, and fries instead of chips, and same thing. So unless you like paying (after tip) $ 60 for two sandwiches, fries and a drink, go someplace else, like Chandler’s. At least they serve fries with their burgers and sandwiches. To make a short story long, okay food (I’ve had much better, much cheaper) but...
