Stop #3 on our Summer Hot Dog Joint and Diner tour 2018...and a decent trip from our area, Hot Dog Caboose in Midland Park, NJ.
My son Jason REALLY wanted to go here (plus I love trains, lol), so we made the trip today. Very cool location in an actual caboose sitting on an abandoned siding along with an old passenger car at the old station (now an art gallery). It's also next to an active local freight line, didn't see a train tho :(
Decent sized menu, but this is about the dogs. Hot dogs are natural casing Sabretts cooked hot water style if I'm not mistaken. They have lots of topping options as well as regular or pretzel buns. I opted for two chili cheese dogs...one regular bun, one pretzel bun...and a plain with mustard on a pretzel bun. Jason had a plain dog on a pretzel bun (and some chicken bites). Really good stuff. Tasty chili, cheese sauce and snappy dog. Pretzel buns were toasted on the outside, soft on the inside. Really good texture.
I had an awesome Boylan Bottling diet root beer as well. Had a little spicy kick to it...
Jason ended his meal with a Sponge Bob ice cream bar.
Sitting area has 3 round wooden tables with umbrellas and is freight track adjacent, lol.
Definitely worth the trip. Check 'em...
Read moreWhile eateries with edifices consisting of converted train cars are not a unique idea (There was a similar hot dog place in Passaic a few years ago; the caboose still stands at its location at River Road next to the Gregory Avenue bridge, but it's now a used car dealership), Hot Dog Caboose has its own unique charm. It is foremost, a standout structure in the area, an actual caboose car being located within the site of the former Wortendyke Train Station in Midland Park, thus making it quite apropos for its site. It is an extremely popular eatery in the area, with lots of locals, bus and truck drivers, and even people from miles away stopping by for a bite. And why not? Firstly, the hot dogs are Sabrett's, a top brand. Their sides, particularly the spuds, are a great complimentary dish, the prices are very reasonable and the service is among the best I have encountered. Even though this place is ADA compliant, the manager took a little time to bring out a meal to a wheelchair bound customer. Kudos to this establishment. Seating here is just a few umbrellaed tables, but in case of overflow, there are a few benches nearby for...
Read moreCame for the unusual atmosphere of enjoying a hotdog 🌭 from an old PRR Caboose and was not disappointed. The Sabrett dogs are so good, love the snap as you bite into one. My husband and I got our typical order to try. Saurkraut and mustard a top a delicious bun soft and tender. He also got a Texas Frito dog which was chili, onions and crushed Fritos corn chips tasted exactly like what we thought. The day was brisk and our hotdogs were satisfying although it would have been nice to have them hotter, the weather cooled them off too quickly. We will try again another day. Yes, it was good and priced well. The drinks selection was terrific too. I got a Boylan...
