Read moreOh, Shanghai, I love you. The people who work there are gruff and not especially pleasant, but the food is awesome. I first went to this place when I was in high school (20 years ago), and the food is still just as good now as it was then. I particularly love the Sizzling Rice Soup and Garlic Chicken. The Sizzling Rice soup is absolutely the best I have ever had, hands down. And, I spent the past 10 years living in Chicago and trying all the Chinese restaurants in the different neighborhoods, so I have a wide range of Chinese food from which to grade this place. The egg rolls are ok. The fried rice is excellent. They are quick to prepare your order, but do not expect the usual pleasantry involved in waitressing. The lady who seated us tossed our menus on the table in a huff, which was actually kind of funny. After a change in ownership I initially thought it was just as good but something here about the consistency has seriously changed.
It used to be 9/10 times it was great, but as of late the chances of getting a good meal has dropped significantly.
I don’t know how else to say it, the food tastes like it’s leftovers. Once upon a time every meal was served hot and fresh with ample sauce, now the food is often times tough and chewy, with no sauce. You know how that happens? Microwaved food.
My guess is that due to lack of staff at the beginning of the week they make large portions of their food, and then just re-warm it as necessary. It creates a very unpleasant mouth feel and it makes the food taste and smell weird.
When this place is good, 5 stars all the way, but that doesn’t really happen anymore. After 3 bad meals in a row, I don’t think I’ll be going back, which...
